It’s been long enough. Let’s be real. Bad Romance was world stopping we know, but it was genuinely just a different era. Sonically, Abracadabra takes everything Bad Romance debuted, emphasizes it, and goes extremely above and beyond. The instrumentals, the classic Gaga sound, and the heavenly vocals all morph Abracadabra into arguably her best, most Gaga song ever.25 points

Gaga sang a slightly extended version of the new lyrics she’s been teasing during MTN last night in Melbourne: “Come find comfort in my arms and in the morning it’ll be alright…” Timestamp- 4:3217 points

“Sabrina Carpenter Becomes Latest Artist to Push Back Against Trump Admin Co-Opting Music Some artists, however, have largely kept publicly silent about the use of their songs. Notably, Taylor Swift, TIME’s 2023 Person of the Year who has at other times been hawkish about unsanctioned use of her music and has called out Trump before for falsely implying her endorsement, has not issued any statement after she had her songs from her latest album The Life of a Showgirl used in White House materials.” https://time.com/7338216/trump-white-house-social-media-music-artists-copyright-sabrina-carpenter/6 points

I mean, I’m of the camp that celeb activism is overrated, hollow, largely performative and generally only marginally effective unless it’s accompanied by an actual pressure campaign towards specific action. The compulsory speech component where people basically try to bully celebrities into mirroring their positions so which inevitably results in them posting some canned infographic intended to make the fans more comfortable consuming their product is also corny as hell, tbh. As a public performance, it has certain symbolic value, but it, in many ways, feels like a glorified version of stan war nonsense (“oh mother absolutely ENDED the White House on Twitter!”). Under Trump specifically, most celebs seem to oppose him and his base (ie the people that would need to hear the oppositional messaging the most) have been thoroughly inundated and propagandized against celebrities (“fake news media,” “Hollyweird,” “liberal elites”) that it will never resonate with them or even reach them, so it feels an awful lot like preaching to the choir. As far as Gaga is concerned, she’s done more for the LGBTQ+ community in garnering the initial wave of acceptance and cultural normalization towards the beginning of the 2000s than most public figures that I don’t necessarily expect her to do much more. Similarly, I also think a lot of fans who want their faves to speak up just can’t deal with the ambiguity of “how does my fave feel about Palestine” and what fans are usually asking for isn’t activism, but rather affirmation of their feelings + parasocial attachment to their fave. Call me cynical, but I think if you’re talking “activism” and what celebrities have to say is anywhere near the center of the conversation, you should probably re-evaluate your priorities lol.6 points

I think most of Gaga’s stances on things are rather obvious and always have been lol. She always uses her shows to promote LGBTQ+ rights, kindness, and acceptance. Not to mention Angel Down in the US at The Chromatica Ball, her performances for the Biden campaign/admin, etc. It says something to me that the Trump admin knows better than to use her artistry for their messaging but teeters on the line with some of these other girls…. Taylor was infamously politically ambiguous for years really until Lover era, then went on the biggest tour of all time in some of the most conservative places in the country and couldn’t make ONE (1) statement about LGBTQ+, reproductive rights, etc. I know you call yourself a fan rather than a Stan these days but cmon6 points

I mean. This isn't me defending the billionaire plague but we can't really throw stones here 'cause all Gaga fans live in a glass house these days in regards of "speaking up" about things6 points

XG member Cocona has publicly come out as transmasculine non-binary, sharing a heartfelt letter with fans in honor of their 20th birthday. The rapper, vocalist, and performer from the Japanese girl group posted an emotional statement on Instagram on Saturday (Dec. 6) reflecting on identity, growth, and self-acceptance. “Today, I turned 20,” Cocona wrote. “As I reach this new chapter in my life, I want to share something that’s been in my heart for a long time. I am AFAB transmasculine non-binary. Earlier this year, I had top surgery. I was born and perceived as female, but that label never represented who I truly am.” Cocona continued, “The hardest thing I’ve ever faced was accepting and embracing myself… Now, I can finally say, ‘There’s nothing wrong with who I am inside.’” The performer also expressed gratitude toward their XG bandmates, XGALX founder and producer Simon (Jakops), and their parents, adding that their support helped make the journey possible. The message quickly drew an outpouring of love and praise from fans, with XG supporters and members of the LGBTQIA+ community celebrating Cocona’s honesty. The post, which included emoji symbols of unity and infinity, ended with the words: “May these words gently light a spark in someone’s heart. And to everyone who needs it — may my love reach all of them.” Shortly after, XGALX CEO and artistic director Simon (Jakops) shared his own statement on Instagram, expressing respect and support for Cocona. “I am deeply moved and filled with respect as Cocona courageously shared their passion with the world,” he wrote. “I will continue to provide sincere support so that each member can be truly respected not only as a ‘working artist’ but also as a person.” Simon reflected on the group’s journey together — noting that all members have now reached adulthood — and reaffirmed that XG’s mission goes beyond music and visuals, aiming to share “the pure and essential heart of each member” with fans around the world. Since debuting under XGALX in 2022, XG has earned international recognition for their polished performance style, multilingual lyrics, and message of female empowerment. Cocona’s coming-out marks a significant and visible moment for LGBTQ+ representation within the global pop landscape — particularly in the Japanese and Korean entertainment industries, where conversations around gender identity continue to evolve. https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/xg-cocona-comes-out-transmasculine-non-binary-1236130004/5 points

Look, I'm not a fan of her by any means and don't know how she became the It Girl of the moment but I felt frustration on her behalf when the absolute worst was read into this ad, in a way that could only occur in the 21st century. It's basically an exact replica of Brooke Shield's 80's Calvin Klein jeans ad where she makes the genes/jeans pun while talking about the biological element and how it's very similar to jeans. No one read anything bad into that ad back then because people took stuff at face value and knew when a cigar was just a cigar. Sidney said as much herself in a recent interview when asked to explain the ad and said: "I think the ad spoke for itself." She also suggested that she was chosen as a spokesperson not because of how she looked but because her signature style is jeans and a t-shirt, which is a big factor people conveniently forget. Saying someone has good genes has been a way to call them attractive for years, as well as that they're fit and youthful looking. There was just one iteration of the ad where she even mentioned the biology behind genes, everything else was her doing something unrelated for no reason and was just classic "sex sells" marketing. For people to misunderstand that and be deliberately obstructive just to provoke racial discussion where it had no place to be is just typical of today's world. Even if Sydney is a Republican and has a MAGA supporting family, she's still small fry when it comes to actual major league Nazis and fascists, so let's not forget who the real enemy is. I think the reason she stayed quiet wasn't because she secretly believed in this stuff but simply that she hoped that if she didn't say anything or draw attention to it, it would blow over. That's a strategy that works surprisingly well but it depends on who you are and what the controversy is. Her original tactic wasn't working, so it's time to course correct. Just so you know that staying quiet doesn't mean you secretly support something awful, it can literally just mean you don't want drama.4 points
