The lack of rap songs in the Hot 100’s top 40 is the latest sign of a recent dip in rap’s commercial dominance. Hip-hop’s overall market share reached a peak in 2020, when it neared 30%. That had slipped to just over 25% in 2023, and has been at 24% so far in 2025, through the week of Oct. 23. In the Hot 100 chart for the equivalent chart week five years ago (dated Oct. 24, 2020), a whopping 16 of the top 40 were rap songs, while in the equivalent chart two years ago (Oct. 28, 2023) there were eight rap songs in the top 40.

The show just ended. It was the best concert of my life and it's not even the first time I see her live (and I already watched The Mayhem Ball a million times on Youtube). She sounds so f*cking good live I swear she's the best vocalist of our generation and ofc I'm biased bc this was my concert but I think she never sounded better. One of the things I love most about Gaga is that we know most of the lyrics she sings (on original songs) primarily come from her, even if in collaboration with others (which is of course an essential part of the creation process). But there are some tracks that Gaga either didn't write lyrics for at all, or had very minimal lyrical input into (like by changing just a few words). I'd love to know what all of these songs are, out of sheer curiosity. She showed the world that she can TFM/BTW energy to the next level and create fresh, high quality music in 2024, when the Pop landscape was mainly dominated by cute TikTok friendly pop songs (or even just no pop at all) The Music Video has (only) 47M views, while the Antidote Live and The Poison Live sit at 4M and 2.4M respectively. On Spotify the song has almost 284M streams.

In America there’s a polarized energy between coastal elitism and regional pride. To many (due in part to himself and the Fox News cycle), Newsom is among the group that represents coastal elitism bc he’s pretty smug. As for why people left might not like him, it’s bc he really has a tendency to get behind some BAD policies like anti homeless ones but then at the same time genuinely good ones but the prevailing feeling is he picks where he leans for vanity reasons not moral principle. For instance, he is very outspoken against Trump but people feel like he’s doing it to make a run for president not just bc it matters a lot to himz Basically he seems slimey and opportunistic to people which is not wholly unfounded. There’s definitely worse picks, for sure. He just has some trust issue baggage but yeah a liberal governor from California is going to have a hard time regardless of who it was

It’s my guess as to why he didn’t seem overly enthusiastic about Kamala’s nomination. Biden ran on one term presidency and then would pave the way for the next gen and Newsom REALLY wanted it (I imagine some promising convos were had). And then his running again and dropping out torpedo’d that so he’s been trying the last few months to build some national momentum hence the rebrand as like dirtbag liberal on socials
