Well she will inevitably break Adele's record with one of her albums so not surprising to me. The key difference is, when Adele released 25, everyone and their mother rushed to buy a personal copy, and maybe one for the car. People gifted the album to eachother at Christmas because they thought the receiver likes Adele just as much as they do. That's an artist that really touched the regular person. Like Céline did before her. Like Whitney with Bodyguard. Taylor releases same bland songs with 55 variants in 120 formats and her fanbase makes sure to get all of them because they think it's their personality. Art and music can be commercial, but Taylor is just the soundtrack to late capitalism. I will continue to be disgruntled, and she'll continue to sell millions every week.37 points

Because you can’t manufacture a viral success, which is exactly what they tried to do.22 points

I’m actually glad that she’s breaking Adele’s record. Imagine on one side you have a masterpiece album 25 and on the other side you have the worst pop album released by a major artist this year. But somehow still, it breaks the record. It shows how fraudulent, inorganic and consumerist all this is.17 points

Update: The Life of a Showgirl surpasses a major 10-year-old consumption record held by Adele, and continues to near the modern-era single-week album sales record. Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl has now earned 3.5 million equivalent album units in the United States, according to initial reports to data tracking firm Luminate, since the album’s release on Oct. 3. Of that sum, traditional album sales (physical and digital purchases) equal 3.2 million copies, with the remaining 300,000 powered by streaming activity of the songs on the album. https://www.billboard.com/music/chart-beat/taylor-swift-life-of-a-showgirl-first-day-sales-debut-week-1236082178/ ⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃ PREVIOUSLY (OCT. 6): Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl has reached 3 million in traditional album sales (physical and digital purchases), across all versions of the album, according to initial reports to data tracking firm Luminate. On the album’s first day of release (Oct. 3), it cleared 2.7 million sold. Showgirl has earned over 3.2 million equivalent album units in the U.S. (Each unit equals one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription on-demand official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album.) Of note, none of the tracks from the album are available to purchase individually on digital stores. As for Showgirl’s streaming start – its 12 songs generated over 300 million on-demand official streams in its first two days in the U.S. (Oct. 3-4). The most-streamed song on Showgirl in its first two days is “The Fate of Ophelia,” with more than 48 million official on-demand steams. That number could grow significantly following the song’s official music video premiere on YouTube on Sunday, Oct. 5. ⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃⁃ PREVIOUSLY (OCT. 4): Taylor Swift’s The Life of a Showgirl album is off to a sparkling start in the United States. On its first day of release, Oct. 3, the set sold 2.7 million copies in traditional album sales (physical and digital purchases) across all versions of the album, according to initial reports to data tracking firm Luminate. That marks Swift’s biggest week ever, and the second-largest sales week for any album in the modern era — since Luminate began electronically tracking data in 1991. The only larger sales week in that span of time was registered by the opening frame of Adele’s 25, which sold 3.378 million copies in its first week in 2015. Showgirl also stuns with a new modern-era record (1991-present) for the most copies of a vinyl album sold in a single week, having already sold 1.2 million copies on wax. That breaks the single-week record, set by Swift in 2024, when her last album, The Tortured Poets Department, sold 859,000 copies on vinyl in its first week. Luminate’s sales, streaming and airplay data powers Billboard’s charts. All numbers in this story are for the U.S. only. Further news of first-week building sales and streaming activity for the album, as provided by Luminate, will be reported in the coming days.14 points

Y’all saying this album is poorly written when Dead Dance sounds completely AI written but y’all eat it up. Is that Taylor’s best written album? No but is it weak? Also no. Lyrically I think she over did it with TTPD and this is a more simple and fun experience. It’s clear she made it while touring because of the lyrics. She performing her butt off every night, flying everywhere and making this music? The girl was tired. If this isn’t your kinda album that’s fine but i love it, every song is pretty catchy, it’s just the right length and it doesn’t over stay its welcome.13 points

I don’t want to be a hater but my take away from all of this is how much is she willing to sacrifice her artistry, relatability and morals in the name of being ‘on top’. How much success and power is enough for her or is it never enough? Does she respect her fans or are they just income streams? When does the quality of the music become secondary to winning the popularity contest and breaking records? I sound like ARTPOP era Gaga right now lol #musicnotthebling11 points

He looks like the DL trade that hits you up on Grindr whenever he fights with his wife, asks you to suck his **** in his garage while his family is asleep inside the house, but when you get there and he whips it out, you realize he hasn’t showered, and it’s not that “hot sexy man musk after a long day at work” kinda smell, it’s more of a “oh he doesn’t use soap when he showers” kinda smell, so you end up leaving and going home disappointed yet full of guilt and regret for even coming over in the first place. she looks gorgeous tho.10 points

Hey everyone, I wanted to share something personal and see if anyone here has ever felt the same. I was at Gaga’s show in London last night, and from the moment she appeared on stage until the very end, I felt… nothing. I wasn’t happy, sad, or excited, just emotionally frozen, almost like my brain couldn’t process what was happening. It’s strange because I’ve been to several of her tours before and I always felt everything so intensely. But this time was different. The difference is that I’m not that teenage boy anymore. Back then, I was just a kid who found comfort and identity in her lyrics, who learned from her that being ‘different’ isn’t wrong. Now I’m an adult, living on my own, out to my parents, with a life that finally feels mine. I bought the ticket myself, went to the show on my own terms and suddenly, there I was, standing in front of the person who has been shaping me for 18 years. It felt like a collision of past and present, that teenage version of me meeting the grown-up me, face to face, in front of the person who taught me self-love. Maybe that’s why my emotions shut down. It wasn’t just a concert; it was too meaningful to process in real time. Today, it’s all hitting me. I keep crying and right now, it almost feels like it never even happened, like a dream I can’t quite hold on to. Has anyone else ever gone through something similar, feeling numb in a moment that should’ve been overwhelmingly emotional, and only processing it later? Did the feelings eventually come back for you? I’d really love to hear if others have experienced this too.9 points

It's not even about money for her, it's the prestige behind breaking all of these records and letting history know that she's one of the big dogs. Pure ego. But unfortunately when we see these stats published in some dusty Wikipedia page, all anyone will do is laugh at how trash and forgettable these albums are. Evidence of some virus that took over the world for a few years.7 points

I really wish Swifties would wake up to this kind of crap. She doesn't care about you, she just cares about your money. And they will still bend over backwards to defend it. Cult7 points

It’s all pretty sad to me. All of this in the name of being on top, being the most successful. The amount of people being rinsed to buy all the variants, the environmental damage of this reducing and shipping all these many orders, the sheer mediocrity of the music. She’s lost her relatability and charm. Throughout her career I’ve always felt she’s been worth defending as a great songwriter but I think she’s even lost touch with that. And using her powerful voice to put other people like Charli down. It’s not cool.7 points
