I have to respectfully come at this from a different viewpoint—there are millions of people (half the country) who are terrified and appalled at the current administration. What Gaga, her message, and her new music bring to many of us is the opportunity to dance through the storm. The one thing we can’t let go of—and honestly, the ultimate form of protest—is our ability to find and access joy. That’s where Gaga’s true brilliance shines through. She did it in 2008 when Americans were reeling from the economic collapse, and her music was lauded as a much-needed escape. Pop gave people a way to dance through the chaos. Gaga is nothing if not timely. Now, with Mayhem, she’s poised to help us through yet another dark time in our history. Americans do love Gaga. Just because millions are afraid of anything that resembles queer art doesn’t mean this country doesn’t need her now more than ever—maybe even more than most. She may not be at the heights of Kendrick (his art is more accepted here because it’s masculine-coded, as is all of hip-hop), but she will have a massive impact—even if she’s not getting #1 debuts for her singles left and right. She’s giving this country the chance to access joy in a very dark time, and something tells me she knew exactly what she was doing with the timing of it all.
