Ramble alert Joker isn't getting the worldwide acclaim we hoped for and a lot people are worried about how Gaga is dealing with this but I don't think Gaga is too suprised by this. I feel She's seasoned, connected, and experienced enough to smell a post production/internal mess from afar. If some of us here could see the cracks early on then I'm sure she could too. If Gaga was confident in this project she would never schedule another solo project so soon after the movie drops. neither would she release an "accompanying" album before the movie release when the movie has a soundtrack of its own. Imagine her dropping music during ASIB rollout akin to die with a smile. She was completely invested in that and every appearance she made during that era except enigma was dedicated to promoting ASIB. I havnt seen the movie yet because I'm disappointed at the amount of screen time she has. and i don't care what anybody says, that was not only a stupid move but very deceptive promotion. I'm happy but not surprised that once again her acting is being praised despite a subpar script. They need to stop wasting this woman's talent. Bradley really deserves his flowers for knowing what was best for the movie and prioritizing that.35 points

First of all, let me say that I’m not angry or mad at any of you specifically so don’t feel personally dragged by what I’m about to say. That said, I wanted to clarify a couple of things about the ACTUAL movie (no spoilers) and what I’ve been reading on this site for the last week, since (like with every single Gaga release) a part of this website has fallen into madness. Fyi, I’ve watched JFAD 3 times now with family and friends and I’ve really enjoyed it. 1. Stop complaining about the film if you haven’t watched it! It’s crazy to me that any LM could completely give up a piece of art where Gaga is present just because of other people’s judgement. YOUR OWN TASTE is more important TO YOU than anybody else’s! 2. Stop moaning about Gaga’s screen time! I’ve already seen people on here giving timestamps, total duration of Gaga’s performance on the film and unhinged reactions. I’m sorry, but this is all very wrong. Gaga’s performance is the ray of light in the movie. When she’s on screen she literally brings the sun to Arthur (even if she’s a baddie) and you, as the viewer, who are immersed in this dark world, feel the same warmth. She might not be on screen as much as him but the majority of the film is slow and it’s mainly trial scenes in the court. That’s mainly why she’s not as much on screen. But those minutes where she’s on screen are well spread out and it REALLY doesn’t feel like poor screen time. Also, QUALITY>>>>>>QUANTITY. 3. Stop worrying about Gaga’s career after this movie! In their career every great actor is part of at least one film that eventually fails with critics and charts. And the positive side of this is that Gaga was praised on the majority of reviews, even the bad ones. Do you realize how great this is? She’s not getting dragged with the film itself, actually it’s quite the opposite, people wanted more and that’s good. Plus, any other director or producer watching this movie won’t need to read about her on reviews because it’s very clear on screen that her performance is exceptional, not only in singing parts, but in her acting in general. She is going to come out of this film even stronger, as an actress. 4. Please stop spreading misery on here saying that JFAD not going well will impact Gaga’s own future projects. 5. Stop talking sh*t about Todd while some months ago, when the first trailer came out and it set the record for views, you were all praising him for giving Gaga such a big role. And this was pretty much the tone until Venice Premiere and the first reviews came. Criticism is ok of course but some comments… wow, touch some grass. I had to get this off of my chest because there is so much misunderstanding on here these days… Feel free to disagree with me on what I wrote, but if there’s one thing you should get away with is, make you own opinion about art. So if you haven’t, don’t hesistate, go out and watch this movie. And then you’ll decide what you think of it. Sometimes it’s very easy to get influenced by comments on here… I see that on myself as well. And I’m sure we’re all in good faith since we’re all here cheering for Miss Lady Gugu Gargoyle, but let’s try to keep it positive while we wait for her next big thing aka LG7.32 points

Big spoilers so please don't read if you don't want to be spoiled I'm shocked to find that almost every single person who watched the movie seemed to miss the giant twist at the end. Did you catch it? Probably not because they paid it absolute dust and left it as a blurry, unfocussed shot in the background. It has me frustrated because noone seems to know the actual ending The Joker isn't killed at the end. In the very last shot of the movie the Joker is CREATED The guy who kills Arthur at the end, that wasn't a totally random moment. Throughout the film they kept focussing on him, how he was closely following the Joker and Arthur's case, he liked what the Joker symbolised. They showed him so much that I kept thinking "oh he's gonna pop up later on in some way." Well he did, he kills Arthur because he's disgusted in him for humanising himself and revoking the Joker persona. And then, the part everyone misses, while Arthur bleeds out he leans against the wall laughing while CUTTING HIS FACE ON EITHER SIDE. HE IS THE REAL JOKER FROM THE BATMAN UNIVERSE. So at the very moment we see that Arthur has denounced his Joker persona, he dies as a real human and the REAL Joker is born. Arthur created the Joker not in himself, but the real joker. An actual psychotic freak with a cut up face. Not a troubled human being, beaten down by society, anti-hero And as a side note, when I watched the first Joker film a few weeks ago I was so excited by the twist that he was the one who killed Bruce Wayne's parents and created Batman. Great twist. But I remember thinking 'that timeline is a bit weird though. The Joker is already old? Wouldn't that make him in his like 60's in the Batman universe?". And also I don't think it was ever traditionally the story that Joker killed his parents. And then when we see the young guy become the Joker at the end of JFAD, and it's been 2 years since the first film, the timeline suddenly matched up perfectly and the story of who killed the parents. Idk I felt very satisfied with that because it cleared up like the only plothole I personally found in the first one lol30 points

Personally - I think she’s playing the radio silence move bc she’s seeing JFad’s lashings, and laying low as the GP digests the mess. I have to give tens, amazing move. and the fact LG7 is happening in 1-3 weeks… a palette cleanser to change the convo… her mindddd25 points

She knew about the changes in the script but not the final cut and honestly, she looked surprised and disappointed in Venice, her best scenes were cut, for no reason.. from a deep character she became a trophy character.. she's more a cameo to bring views than a developed character24 points

I know she's aware of all the negative stuff that is online and probably doesn't want to say anything right now. She also did some press a couple of weeks ago, taped several interviews, released a companion album and performance. As far as her movie promo schedule, I think she's finished for now and it's up to the audience if they want to see it. She's probably taking a small break to get ready for LG7 lead single.22 points

Yes. It's Gaga's first #1 film in the opening weekend. She is in the #1 song and #1 movie in the world right now, if that's any consolation.21 points

100% It's pretty shocking how much was left out in the film that was shown in the trailer. She obviously knew this b4 hand and thought f**k it, I'm gonna make my own harley quinn era with a 6.5 album and I'm bloody glad she has.21 points

I know radio update has been posted but here's the ranking: 17 (+1) - finally up from 18 Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars - Die With A Smile 38.37 (+0.63) - I think the biggest update in this last week was 0.5+ so this is good !19 points

You are all being too dramatic. It's not doing well. But it's not one of the biggest failures of all time. There's been much worse. Also, of everyone involved in the movie Gaga is emerging looking the best. People wanted more of her. She's not a writer/director/producer. She has .mostly great reviews. And she's emphatically not the lead. So, it's not truly her movie to shoulder. Plus, 39% of the audience polled said they went for her. Only 3% less than Phoenix. She's walking away from this a well reviewed star wirh box office draw who was in a movie badly mismanaged by a director in over his head. Margot Robbie was in the movie that lost the most money one year (Babylon) and the one that made the most the following year (Barbie). I truly don't think this will follow Gaga. Almost everyone thinks it was the script/direction/concept. She's good. Plus, honestly I still think it's a better movie than House of Gucci.18 points

After seeing JFAD, it all clicked to me. Clearly the film did not portray Gaga’s talents in the best light. For the most part, Gaga was made to sing in character with her “bad” voice. The musical numbers were not very powerful in the film. Gaga created a phenomenal song for the movie (Folie a Deux) and it was paid dust in a 20 second scene. As a result, the film’s soundtrack is probably not so great and as a viewer of the film you don’t see all of Gaga’s talents shine through. I strongly believe Gaga began to realize this as the film was being edited, and decided to change the narrative. She comes up with the idea of Harlequin, a companion album, in which she can sing to the best of her abilities and showcase her real talent. Her fans get to hear her original songs in full plus how well she can actually cover the songs used in the movie. It’s almost like an “F you” to the director. Further to this point, you cannot tell me that Die With A Smile was not for Joker. It literally has “die” and “smile” in the title. I bet Gaga created it for the movie, and that Todd scrapped it. Gaga knew it was amazing, and just as she did with Harlequin, she needed to find a way for it to see the light of day. If my theory is true, I really give kudos to Gaga for not letting others squander her creative output.17 points

I’m sure Gaga couldn’t care less about the criticism because she clearly believed deeply in this project and its ideas. The film is pretty good, and I think people are completely missing how delirious and political it really is. It feels like everyone is blind to the fact that behind all the madness, there’s a sharp critique of spectacle and society.17 points

“Warner is reporting $40M this morning, others see it lower. Amazingly, the studio’s overseas $80M+ projection held up with what’s coming in at a $81.1M opening; total worldwide at $121.1M, not $140M+. Clearly, no one wanted to see Joker 2 (though I know one person who did, who actually enjoyed it) especially when compared to the October record domestic start of the 2019 first film of $96.2M. The only nice thing you can say about Joker: Folie à Deux‘s opening here is that when it comes to movie musicals, its stateside start is bigger than the entire domestic gross of Cats ($27.1M). More under the hood of Joker 2: Men over 25 attended the most at 41% with a 40% grade, followed by females over 25 with a 46% grade, men under 25 at 19% with a 34% grade, and women under 25 at 16% with a 45% grade. Sixty-three percent of the audience was 18-34. The diversity turnout was 43% Caucasian, 27% Latino and Hispanic, 8% Black, 17% Asian & 5% NatAm/Other. Forty-three percent went to Joker 2 because of Phoenix, 39% went because of Gaga, 39% also went because it was part of a franchise they love, 23% said it looked fun and entertaining, while only 7% –not that many– heard it was “good.”“ https://deadline.com/2024/10/box-office-joker-folie-a-deux-1236107521/13 points

[Sorry if I'm using the wrong tag] I sat through a cam recording of the movie and timed all of Gaga’s screen appearances using a stopwatch. She’s on screen for roughly about 34 minutes. Keep in mind that this is an overestimate because: • I included full scenes where she interacted with Arthur. • I included musical sequences focused on the Joker since she was singing during them. The movie is 2 hours 18 minutes long. She appears in roughly 24% of the film.13 points

What bothers me the most about the whole thing that's happening with this film its how people started turning their backs on Todd Philips, calling him a hack and a bad director the moment he didn't gave the audience what they wanted. The movie is so well shot, so well acted and scripted... Todd clearly knew what he wanted to do, but its the creative risks he took what bothers most people, who don't know how to differentiate a genuinely bad movie from a movie they didn't like. Also, i think people's inability to admit something just isn't their cup of tea is what's truly damaging this movie's reputation. You have people left and right calling this film the worst thing in existence when that's just not true. It's an overexaggeration... like, i get people might disagree with the choices they made, but acting like the film is the worst sequel ever made and to root for its failure its a bit too much. Then, they complain when we get souless corporate crap made by commitee and wonder why Hollywood isn't trying anymore to do anything bold, risky, artistic or audacious.13 points

I do think she did know. Well, one of the first things she publicly said about the film is that the script was not enough on its own. Not surprising she had to record Harlequin ´cause as she says, she wasn’t ready to let her character go. All that training and method acting for such a film at the end. Reminds me of when she shaded Ridley Scott during the HOG campaign, basically saying that great acting alone can’t save a film if the direction isn’t right, and that Ridley should have kept the scene where she makes out with Salma13 points

Truly. Mother is mothering. She dowsed a ton of well received projects (DWAS, HM on Kimmel) on the fire and she's about to pivot away from Joker entirely with the LG7 lead. This was her design. She had an exit strategy. She's required to promote it by contract. But she likely won't stick her neck out any longer than neccesary. She wants to move on quickly. It's a SMART plan. And I think it will work.12 points

I agree. Honestly, releasing LG7's lead in the same month seemed strange from the get-go. I know some people thought she might want to ride of Joker 2 buzz (back when we thought it would be positive), but usually there would be some breathing room and an attempt to extend the buzz as long as possible (e.g. if they really wanted to ride off good buzz, it feels like LG7's lead would have been released in November). The same month, though, feels like it's an attempt to counteract Joker 2. To be fair, I do feel like the negativity is overblown. I was disappointed, but I'm also baffled at the film receiving a lower cinemascore than Aquaman 2, The Flash, etc. In my opinion, Gaga's team knew it would be controversial, but I doubt they thought it would be this controversial.11 points

I really think that Harlequin may exist as a way for her to dissociate from the movie-so that her fans think of the album first and not the movie i mean, think about her press appearances in the last week. They may be for JFAD but she’s dressed for and talking about Harlequin. She kinda took it and did her own thing, and part of me wonders if she knew people would be disappointed in the movie and she’s kinda doing damage control11 points

(This is a translated article) In the lobby of the Cinemark of the Pátio Paulista shopping mall, in São Paulo, at least 30 people piled up, euphoric, on Wednesday night (2), several of them wearing T-shirts that printed Lady Gaga's face or dressed in costumes that reproduced the looks of the singer, co-protagonist of the film. Recording videos with their cell phones, one person asked aloud "Are you here to see who?", to which the group replied in chorus: "Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga, Lady Gaga!". The 8:30 pm session was one of several scheduled by that cinema for the first day of screening of "Joker: FAD", a sequel to the 2019 film. Considered as Queen of the gays, Gaga brought to that cinema an organized cheering of people from the LGBTQIA+ community. They all entered the room together, during the screening of the trailers, screaming, waving, jumping, tapping their feet and dancing. It was enough for Gaga to appear on screen for the first time for the whole group to make a racket and prevent the others present in the room from hearing the sound of the film – "give her the Oscar", one of them shouted. The room, with more than 200 seats, was packed. The riot did not stop and, after about ten minutes of screening, the lights were turned on, and the film was interrupted. Some wondered aloud if perhaps Gaga was about to enter the room. The ones arrived at the place were actually two Cinemark employees, accompanied by three mall security guards. One of the company's representatives said that he had received many complaints because of the noise and asked the group of fans to behave so as not to disturb those who had paid the most to watch the film. He also added that he would not hesitate to pause the film again if the hubbub continued. Security guards returned minutes later when Gaga began singing her first song from the film, which is a mix of musical and courtroom drama. The group of rioters did not speak out again. About halfway through the film, many of the singer's fans, bored, began to enter and leave the room repeatedly. They went down the stairs stamping their feet hard. One of them, dressed as Gaga, made a gesture to leave the room, but stopped when the singer released her voice again - he then knelt down and made gestures of praise towards the screen. The shadow of his silhouette covered much of the projection. The session only had a racket again in the final minutes, when the group began to protest with each new song that was sung in the plot. https://www1.folha.uol.com.br/ilustrada/2024/10/sessao-de-coringa-e-parada-em-sao-paulo-apos-baderna-e-gritaria-de-fas-de-lady-Gaga.shtml10 points
