Neil Tennant has hit out at Taylor Swift, claiming her music doesn't come close to music by the likes of Michael Jackson Speaking at the Guardian Live event “An Evening with Pet Shop Boys” in London on Monday, Tennant said he couldn’t entirely understand Taylor Swift’s popularity. He noted that Swift’s music fell short of his expectations for an artist of her success level and claimed her discography didn’t stand up to those of pop stars like Michael Jackson. “I was looking at the chart today and it is all Taylor Swift. She sorts of fascinates me as a phenomenon because she is so popular. But then I listen to the records and I think, ‘Where are the famous songs? What is Taylor Swift’s Billie Jean?’ Shake It Off? I listened to that the other day and it is not Billie Jean, is it?” He added he likes Swift’s music because it “brings people together” but “the one disappointing thing is the music, not the lyrics”. Tennant also critiqued Swift’s practice of drawing inspiration from her love life for lyrics. “To have a successful pop career now you have to have a series of relationships, which are amazing and then break up tragically,” he said. source28 points

She's not the only one who samples but her sampling process is very mediocre and literal. Gaga sampled several songs on Chromatica but she worked and reinterpreted them, she didn't just copy/pasted like Ava usually does.16 points

"same DNA, but born this way" We all have a unique genome, which is literally what makes us each different and special. We dont have the same DNA. This lyric always drives me nuts because its so glaringly inaccurate16 points

That f*cking song I took a bus tour around Manhattan and all I heard was New York, New York; Empire State of Mind; and that abomination on repeat for hours Would actually love to see what Taylor can write when she isn't ruminating on an ex or pretending she's a victim of anything. Like, sorry, but I will never feel bad for an attractive, blonde, white billionaire "My ex hurt me" hits way less when you realize the person saying it could afford to buy his hometown, bulldoze it, and use a space lazer to engrave her name and a middle finger into the rubble. Billionaires don't have feelings13 points

Billie Eilish, Sia Green Day, and Fall Out Boy are among the hundreds of artists to sign an open letter asking Congress to pass the Fans First Act, a bill that takes aim at “deceptive” and “predatory” ticket resellers. The letter, organized by the Fix the Tix Coalition, was also signed by a range of artists across all genres, from Becky G, Chappell Roan, and Darlene Love to Graham Nash, Goose, Pixies, and Finneas. Addressed to Sens. Maria Cantwell and Ted Cruz — both members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, & Transportation — the group said the bill would make ticket buying more transparent as well as eliminate illegal bots that “scoop up face value tickets ahead of fans in order to resell at inflated prices on the secondary market.” https://static1.squarespace.com/static/5e91157c96fe495a4baf48f2/t/6629ce7e6cd2781539316daf/1714015870175/20240425-Fix-The-Tix-Artist-Letter.pdf11 points

A Houston judge has denied Travis Scott’s motion to be dismissed from sprawling litigation over the 2021 disaster at the Astroworld music festival ahead of a looming jury trial next month. Scott’s attorneys had argued that the star himself could not be held legally liable for the deadly crowd crush during his the November 2021 performance, which killed 10 and injured hundreds. They argued that safety and security at live events is “not the job of performing artists.” But in a ruling made public on Wednesday, Judge Kristen Hawkins denied that motion, leaving Scott on the hook to face the first jury trial in the case, set to kick off next month. More than 2,500 people have sued over Astroworld, the victims claim that Travis Scott, Live Nation and other organizers were legally negligent in how they planned the event. Scott’s attorneys argued last month that he too should not be held liable for the tragic incident. Even though the event was promoted under Scott’s name and branding, his lawyers said that he was merely an onstage performer who was not responsible for ensuring audience safety. The victim’s attorneys argued that Travis Scott had encouraged fans to break into the concert without a ticket, citing a tweet on the day of the concert in which he said “we still sneaking the wild ones in.” They also said he had create unsafe crowd flow conditions by insisting that Scott be the only musical act to use the main stage on the festival’s first day, and then ignored orders from festival organizers to stop the concert when conditions turned dangerous.9 points

He's right tbf. I like her songs, I like quite a bit of the new album. But let's face it - we're 18 years in since Taylor's first album in 2006 and by now you'd expect to see artists coming through citing Fearless/Speak Now maybe even Red as influences. We're not. By comparison, we're 16 years in since The Fame and people are citing Gaga's The Fame/Fame Monster/BTW as influences. For older legacy acts - we're still seeing the likes of MJ & Madonna be cited by new emerging acts 40+ years in. I don't think there's a single Taylor Swift album (and I like the majority of them, love some of them even), that has any long lasting legacy/impact. Currently the only ones I think might have any impact in 10 years is Folklore/Evermore.9 points

Fans only ordered those extra copies because they were signed. That's false advertising which is illegal in some countries. Billboard shouldn't count the ones that came unsigned but of course they will because Taylor Swift is a winner. She always wins.7 points

I don't wanna get dragged but I really don't get paying like 50 bucks more for a signature. Sign it yourself. If you're a real fan, you'll know your fav's signature - and nobody is gonna care or know but you, anyway. Tell yourself its the real thing enough and you'll gaslight yourself into believing it after enough time passes.6 points
