I think she realized how much of herself she can potentially lose in her creative process. When she creates, she instinctively wants to devour the entire project and immerse herself in it almost in a method-acting type of way. It becomes detrimental to her mental health bc she is a diehard artist that cracks open the deepest parts of her creativity and it seems to have put her in danger in some way with every album. She’s probably trying to navigate safely enveloping herself in her art while maintaining authenticity and protecting herself at the same time. She’s not a “put out singles for the sake of it” kind of girl, which is why I love her so much. She intentionally does not dilute her discography because her bodies of work are true pieces of art and had their contextual moments in her life. I’ve always looked at it as more of “if I don’t have something important to say, why speak?”. Her discography is plenty vast to carry her into eternal stardom and she doesn’t need more bulk songs to push her further. She’s set her name in stone and any body of work she puts out now simply has to be timeless and be worth speaking on. She’s not any old artist, she’s Lady Gaga. It’s just how she does things.18 points

I think the reason we haven't heard much from Gaga this year is probably because she's in jail. She probably killed someone while preparing for Harley Quinn.16 points

She's definitely been making safe choices and I'm not gonna lie it's getting a bit boring. Even Chromatica wasn't that bold imo. But I've accepted it. She's grown now and wants to be taken more seriously so we're never gonna get another ARTPOP. As long as the music's good, I'm gonna listen to it12 points

I think that's 100% the problem here. Today—at least in the US and much of the western world—the term "white culture" has a specific negative connotation. Like, no one has an issue if someone said, "I'm proud of my Swedish/Italian/German/British/etc. heritage", but the phrase "white culture" can be seen as problematic. Plus, with her history with Elon Musk and stuff, it's not far-fetched for people to think of it as racist or prejudiced.10 points

She seems to want to be loved and approved of by everyone these days. She lives for the applause9 points

No but I think fame is extremely effecting her mental health, and her interest in pop music changed, but the whole world expects her to release pop music.9 points

I also remember her saying she would still take her roles very seriously after House of Gucci, but with a healthier approach. I'm positive her silence (which has been broken several times though, be it Sweet Sound of Heaven or her studio pic etc) has to do with what she said in her ig post about The Chromatica Ball Film: as you stated, she's just changed approach and wants more privacy since she made her statements, fame has drained her and her fans have become ungrateful towards everything she does. In the post she also references shooting Joker as a very introspective time period so it's safe to say she's just recovering from all the work she's done in the past year and I wouldn't read too deep into that. She's only human.9 points

White culture is such a dog whistle term. You can have national or regional cultures with predominantly white population like British or Irish but nobody really uses the term "white culture" because all that does is try to create a racial divide (for obvious racist reasons) when nationality is the key component.9 points
-
She did say in the comments it is a "melting pot", which I guess all cultures are. I think the Neo-Nazi claims are very exaggerated, personally. Every time someone asks for proof of her following "Neo-Nazi" accounts, you get nothing or like one popular meme account that is largely unproblematic. Some of the things she says make sense. White people have received a level of historical scrutiny (powered by Western postmodernist intellectual culture, which should be commended for this) that is not regularly thrown at other cultural units. The Eastern or Arab-Muslim slave trade, for instance, has abducted millions of African people into slavery for over a thousand years, and to say that out loud almost feels taboo at this point. This is a problem. Grimes' problem is obviously context and time and place. Social media is not the space for these kinds of conversations. Sadly.9 points

Nah she's definitely not scared of failure otherwise she wouldn't have started Haus Labs which was a big risk considering the industry is oversaturated.8 points

I think it's appropriate for Grimes. Her artistic past has indicated that she's educated enough and radical enough to recognize the dynamics that Elon promotes under the radar, and she chose to try and build her life around that. Only since it failed is she actually backpedaling and trying to distance herself from being lumped in with the Elon crowd. You are who you run with, basically8 points
-
I’m not defending her, I just don’t support throwing around the word Neo-Nazi so liberally that it loses its meaning. People are clearly having way too much fun cancelling people and bashing “whiteness” to realize they are hollowing out the left and armoring the far right. It’s sad and dangerous.7 points

Is Gaga too scared of failure and flopping, so much so, that she’s missing out on potentially succeeding? Or is she going the Adele route and just releasing limited amounts, the “quality over quantity” angle? Other artists have flopped numerous times, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, etc but they continue to put out music regularly. Then end up having their biggest career highs. We know miss Gaga has been scarred by the ARTPOP era, where the word FLOP originated from (along with Yasss), so it’s understandable to a point. She has mentioned in an interview before she’s worried a wrong move may cause everything to unravel. It’s interesting wondering how her mind works.6 points

I think she's just naturally changed and evolved over the years. I don't understand why people constantly feel the need to compare Gaga now to Gaga then. Are there some aspects of her character that I miss? Sure, but people grow and change. I don't think she's overly scared of failure, her priorities are just different now. I'm sorry, but expecting someone to stay the exact same 15 f*cking years later is insane to me. Anytime I see somoene complain about how they want "old Gaga" back, I roll my eyes. She's matured and is a lot more experienced in the business now than when she was first starting, so yeah, naturally her views and her attitude towards things is going to change.6 points

thank God OT: Everything she has done in her career music wise, after ARTPOP, was safe. Imo if you play it safe 100% of the time then you're scared of failure yes5 points

The HOG interviews definitely showed that Gaga takes these Hollywood roles seriously on a level rarely if ever witnessed, to say the least It makes perfect sense for her being who she is to have to mentally prepare for even the promo era for that movie, let alone the release. Every time she has had a major role in something, she has declared it was the most fulfilling artistic project of her entire career. This will be the same, no doubt. Personally, I think it's a bit silly and self-important. Her roles so far simply do not require that level of therapeutic depth and it seems unhealthy for her to insist that they do. The HOG interviews were comical but also painful to watch because of that. Her references to how she studied animals to portray Patrizia and channeled global pain and oppression into some scenes were honestly just plain delusional. Given that this role is definitely the most intense so far, we're probably in for a ride5 points

I agree with this but I don't think it's fair to say only white / western people evolved western ideology to the point it was able to self reflect and critic itself. I am sure a lot of POC and non westerners contributed to this as well. In fact, I would say they are just as important as they show their perspective and that creates new ways of thinking and ideas. Even non western / white countries might view their own history from a western lens because of their recent colonial history. India or Mexico are examples of this. It's hard for these cultures to self reflect and criticise thier people's own wrongdoings when they are still not fully over the long lasting effects of colonialism from the western/white world. We also have to remember that white people were able to rapidly progress in the past 500 years and they became the most powerful group of people history has ever seen. Of course thier academic standards would improve and eventually give them the ability to critic their own race/culture. Colonized and oppressed people did not have the opportunity to advance in this regard.5 points

Ánd: White/Western academics have evolved historical discourse to the point of deconstructing specifically Western ideology A large chunk of today's awareness about white crimes comes from the willingness of Western intellectuals to question their own history. I feel like this is often forgotten. Yes, it was helped along by decolonialist movements etc. but it sure is a historical anomaly for a culture to start a process of self-analysis on the level of scale and sophistication as has happened in the West. If other cultures did this, they would also focus on their own role and agency in history, and we would all learn more and be more on equal footing. But this rarely happens (and if it does, it is often through exposure to Western academic education). That's ok, 'cause the West shouldn't be the standard, but it's something to think about. The European and American far right are essentially trying to stop this self-deconstructive trend in Western academic thought because they think it amounts to self-annihilation. They are not just blaming immigrants and non-whites for everything, they are also blaming white intellectuals for cultural studies and its postcolonialist discourse, and how it seeps into the mainstream.5 points

Yeah, I largely agree. I had someone tell me the other day that it is categorically impossible for non-white nations to be imperialistic . We can simultaneously acknowledge that white European nations have played an outsized role in shaping the cultural paradigm + modern geopolitical landscape through imperialism while also recognizing that they aren’t the only countries that have ever or will ever engage in these kinds of practices.5 points

Ah yes, white culture. From the exact same people that brought you such hits as "All Lives Matter", "Back the Blue", and "Make America Great Again". Not sure why Grimes or anyone here is giving this even a shred of validity. Nobody's talking about European cultures here, this movement (or whatever you wanna call it) comes directly from American whites not feeling special enough because black Americans do have a distinctly American culture and identity that's independent from their national ancestry but still very much based on their blackness. If she wants to take part in French, Italian, or Ukrainian traditions and culture then nobody would bat an eye. Or hell, whatever traditions they have in Montreal or even new age west coast cultures 'cause I'm pretty sure she lives in California. But there is no culture in which the only defining factor is "I have light skin" and that's exactly what she's referring to, whether she knows it or not, because this is an American debate. "White culture" makes as much sense as "straight pride" and it's virtually a synonym with "white pride", only one step removed from "white power", so she deserves those accusations of nazism 'cause she's lending validity to their toxic and bigoted bullsh*t, even if she's just being her usual pick-me "contrarian because I think it makes me sound smart to always have the dissenting opinion" self.4 points

Somewhat agree here. Just about every race has at some point conquered land, taken slaves, oppressed other ppl throughout all of human history all over the world. This is not a "white people" thing. This is a human race thing Even the 1st Nations white ppl colonized from. Ppl generalize them as 1 people and forget they actually were not. Most tribes were not united and fought eachother and in reality the land that was stollen was probably not stollen from the original owners but probably had changed hands multiple times over between them (not that it excuses the atrocites of the Europeans nevertheless) I think what happens is that on a large scale in more recent history white ppl have been the opressors and biggest benefeciaries from colonization and so its more fresh in ppls minds and in historical records and also more impacts still lingering today I think its natural for white colonisation to get emphasized more than others for those reasons. But to act like abusing power and opressing is inherent to being white exclusively is seriously throwing under the rug the entire history of humanity going back thousands of years. Nearly all races have been guilty of these things. But who has had the most power and done the most harm has varied throughout human history depending what time period were looking at. For example the Egypcians And Assyrians were pretty darn ruthless when they were major powers to name a couple examples4 points

There's nothing wrong with being proud of what european culture has brought to the world but the issue is MOST people who take on these takes tend to also view their culture as SUPERIOR...not just different or special and that's where the issue comes because if you are white and see your culture as superior it is a thin line between that and being racist. It just always is.4 points
