  6. First of all, if she’s done a hell of a lot for black queer people. There’s an entire 20 minute section of her film devoted explicitly to the black queer artists and performers that inspired Renaissance and that were a part of her show. She didn’t take an ounce of credit for the sound or themes, gave all of the credit to them, and let them explain the history and the culture. This entire era she has been platforming black queer artists. All those credits she got made fun of for were for the black queer artists she featured and sampled. Not to mention this IS also her culture. She grew up being exposed to queer black house culture by her Uncle Johnny whom she shouts out within the record. The album is dedicated to him and she has spoken at length about his influence on her life, and she goes even further in the film. Second of all, I once more implore you to dig deeper because I’m not so sure you’ve dug deep enough if you think those mentioned songs are shallow and have no meaning when some of them are among the most central thematic pieces of a concept album. You can say you don’t get it, that’s fine. But if you don’t get it, that doesn’t mean it’s shallow it just means you don’t get what the songs are talking about and what roles they play in working toward the album’s core themes. Which again is fine, maybe it won’t ever click but its one thing to say you don’t get it and another to say there’s nothing to get. And to be quite honest with you, it’s not an arrogant position to point out how this site treats black artists it’s the truth. It’s got a long history with highly questionable discussions to and rejection of black art and culture. It happens a lot, but seeing as Beyonce is so famous it usually attracts even more of that very misinformed dialogue. Just like the original Renaissance threads did. You say people are willing to listen to her, yet they’re not willing to let her write about her culture or make music that’s based in genres of her community. They criticize her for it and beg her to go back to pop which whether they mean for it to mean this or not really at its core means go back to making music that’s easier for non-black people to digest. Asking her to start making pop music again is literally asking her to stop making music based in the styles of her community. She transitioned from pop into genres that originate or are important to black culture. And time and time again, this site and beyond had proven that they’re unwilling to pay an ounce of respect to that, nor are they willing to educate themselves or immerse themselves in that new culture.

  7. To stan an artist and be on a website dedicated to an artist who’s so culturally literate, Gaga’s fans really don’t understand anything that isn’t dance pop aimed at white people. Not only the illiteracy of genre and culture this website has but the complete lack of desire to learn is so frustrating. If you don’t get a track then maybe take 10 precious minutes out of your day to do some research about where that sound comes from, the history behind it. Get out of your radio dance pop bubble every once in awhile.

  17. Throughout her 17 years in the industry, Taylor Swift has earned several nicknames from her devoted fanbase — from Blondie to Miss Americana to T-Swizzle. But lately, Swifties have been referring to their idol as their “capitalist queen” more and more often thanks to Swift's excessive limited edition merch drops that fans are encouraged to buy and creating a sense of urgency and exclusivity and adding countdowns. Now Taylor Swift fans have been left fuming that her Eras tour film will cost $19.89 to rent for just 48 hours. The singer has been accused of taking an opportunity to 'make even more money' as many called on her to make it free as she is 'already a billionaire'. Others have criticised her for only letting people rent the concert film instead of allowing them to buy it to keep or stream as part of their subscription. One said on Twitter: 'I'm sorry but mother has been getting kinda money greedy recently cause ain't no way she needs to make it $20 to see one time she's literally a billionaire.' Another penned: 'Why wouldn't she make it free. She's a billionaire & we've already paid to see it in movies.' A third penned: 'She is really finding a way to get every single dollar she can get out of this. renting is crazy.' 'Capitalist queen for real,' another wrote. One more agreed: 'Enough with the cash grabs girl. You have like a billion dollars. Releasing every CD with 8 different versions was already too much but this just feels egregious. Just let it stream or let people straight up buy it. This feels icky.' Someone else said: 'I'm kinda tired of her releasing one thing and then different versions of it later. I want to buy the thing and that's it, I know I've gotten the complete item. Not dribs and drabs of it.' Another fan replied to that Tweet saying: 'The general vibe is that people are unimpressed by this blatant cash grab.' Others pointed out that Taylor had withheld three songs from the movie theater release of her concert film that would now be available in the rented version. Therefore even if fans had paid to see the film in the theater they have to pay again if they want to watch these additional performances. source

  18. SO amazing that she did this majority of our community, especially the younger generation, takes the freedom of living out and gay for granted. They have no concept of what it was like before, and they treat older gay men like trash to be thrown away. Trust me, befriend an older gay man or woman. Aged 50, 60+ (if you can find one alive.) Their stories will completely change your life and outlook.

  21. The first song sounds like a rip off of something from When We All Fall Asleep… the other one is interesting. But honestly if Gaga was going a more “dark” pop path she should do something more sonically interesting. These are like a step below BTW, when she should be aiming for same level or higher.

  27. She’s only 42? Wow, since she was Gaga’s high school idol, I always imagined that she was at least 10 years older than Gaga, but now that I think about it, it makes sense, Brit was sooo young when she started being famous

  29. I think it'll do well, but I don't know if it'll do as well as the first movie. From a financial standpoint, I don't see this one making $1b. I think that in a largely post-pandemic world, it's difficult for movies to get $1b, especially in such a heavily saturated comic book movie space. Critically speaking, it could go either way. In my opinion, this film is high risk/high reward. Like you said, this film is fighting an uphill battle, so frankly, it has to work even harder to prove the naysayers wrong. I think it's going to be difficult for lightning to strike twice, but it can be done. If anything, I think the film's greatest strength IS the fact that it's so different. Some people may question why a sequel needed to be made, why they'd cast Lady Gaga, or why it's a musical, but in a world where many comic book films have become formulaic and predictable, I think having this sort of experimentation is necessary and exciting for a lot of people. I can see a lot of people going to this movie just for the sheer curiosity of it all.

  31. The Color Purple is an American masterpiece. “This story lives forever,” says Taraji P. Henson, quite emphatically. “It’s like Shakespeare. It’s never going to go away.” Henson, who plays Shug Avery in the 2023 film “reimagining” of the classic tale, reflects on the gravity of this newest iteration and of all the productions that have been based on Alice Walker’s Pulitzer Prize–winning novel. 33. I mean not even research but just an open mind. It’s so odd how narrow-minded people can be. And to be clear, when I first heard this I wasn’t *floored. It was a solid song and is best left off the album and released now (if that was how this came to be idk). But I also was a little shocked she came in SO strong bc usually songs for the credits of a movie ain’t like this lmao but then I sat and listened another time with headphones and was like yeah the beat changes are wild. Some lyrics are a bit corny but on the whole it’s a fun af song that’ll be remixed to sh!t in the clubs. Yay. We’d been missing good straight up cúnty music in the club for a while until Renaissance. Yay for more

  35. So her last two albums? Lemonade and Renaissance both have incredibly complex and layered meanings both in their discussion of black culture (both albums) and queer culture (Renaissance specifically). In addition, Lemonade also talks in depth about her marriage struggles. If the meaning passed you by then I do highly recommend you dig into lyric analysis and breakdowns of both albums because the suggestion they’re about nothing is missing the entire grand complex statement both albums make.
