Whispering 18,865
Preach sister! I wasn't tracking when applause was out. Did radio really struggle to play it? Oh and did anyone see that billboard article pushing for Katy to perform at the Super Bowl this year? They were slower to play it, for a debut single from a proven Pop hitmaker that was sitting consistently in the iTunes top 5. It took Applause a while to get to any kind of consistent +1.00 updates, which was ridiculous considering how the song was selling and the circumstances. Jake 0
Radio was overly kind to Do What U Want though. It breached the top 10 without ever doing so (other than its initial release) on iTunes. It ended up treating Applause fairly for how it was selling (moderate radio hit with 100+ AI). GUY had no radio support but I don't think it even went top 200 from the video release, so you can't really blame them. Even Marry the Night was given radio support disproportional to its sales. There is a radio bias, but it's much smaller than some people here make it out to be. Katy constantly delivers catchy songs most people like. She's earned the trust US radio has instilled in her, whether it's been with quality music or not. Her only real misfires have been Birthday, Unconditionally, and Thinking of You. Otherwise her music does very well digitally. Dark Horse has yet to leave the top 100 on US iTunes. There was a time when Gaga's success was heavily driven by airplay too. She was the most spun artist of 2009 and had six CONSECUTIVE pop radio number ones. She earned that radio bias too. She lost it when she took her music and image in a different direction which is fine too, but don't blame Katy for sticking to her, very successful, guns. PicklePower 1,649
I Will Never Let You Down #99 on iTunes. I really want it to do well. In my opinion it's one of the best songs this year MEGHAN TRAINOR | Katy Perry | Taylor Swift | Lady Gaga | Rihanna | Ariana Grande | Beyoncé | Nicki Minaj | Sam Smith

ITunes was in a state of flux during that time, with the rotating promo singles for all the Thanksgiving-Christmas releases and a successful season of The Voice, where almost half of the top 30 slots would be taken up with contestants each week. Radio PDs know that those are temporary entries, so they consider songs staying in the top 11-20 to be candidates for the top 10. That's not radio bias, that's common sense. However, there is most certainly radio bias. It is alive and well and affects the charts every week. 2 out of 4 singles this era have been misfires for Katy. No one is blaming her for being basic and doing the exact same thing over and over and over. People are blaming radio for giving her treatment like no other artist has had in a very long time. (including Gaga's BTW era) They don't even treat Adele, Swifty or Bruno like this...not on a consistent basis. There is a point where radios should allow a Katy song to grow on its own...for once! A fourth or fifth single, that isn't burning up the iTunes chart, would be a nice start! :)

This Is How We Do would not be in top 100 as well... I mean she's lucky do be the favorite of radios (if no Payola  ) No one is treated like Katy is by radios. She owes a lot to them... GagaMyBlood95 9,915
Just a little less than 30 million views for TIHWD in 16 days, that's pretty good if you compare it do Birthday's views... The song(like others) is crazy radio-driven on iTunes and everywhere so we have nothing to talk about that!
Jake 0
Ha. DWUW had radio privilege. Those temp songs dropped out by Thursay/Friday. It still didn't rise into the top 10. DWUW didn't even enter after the AMAs with one of the most discussed performances. Besides, it was still gaining spins when it's digital fall started. I don't care to argue this. It's hard to look at it objectively for many fans. Objectively Katy's music is more public oriented than Gaga's. That doesn't make it bad or basic. Just different. Popularity=/=Baisc. Katy is a safe bank for radio. They know people turn the dial less often when her songs come on. Gaga alienated the public (note the HUGE drop from BTW to Applause's debut). Katy's hits have sold consistently more since Born This Way and she contiues to deliver smashes. Roar alone sold more than all singles on ARTPOP combined. I think Dark Horse did too. Her lessor successes this era followed two of her biggest hits ever. Of course radio was eager to play them, that's just common sense. Airplay may push her music but it's because she's a proven hit maker. Blaming airplay for Katy's success and Gaga's decline in cheap. Katy earned her presence on US radio with a string of massive hits. The "bias" didn't start until after E.T anyway after she delivered four consecutive number 1 hits. Gaga let her presence decline because she followed the music she loved. Neither route is bad, but let's call a spade a spade. Katy's music resonates with the public more right now as proven by her sales, airplay, box office recites, online streams, and YouTube views. I just think villionizing another artist for being successful makes our fanbase look bitter and cheap.

DWUW didn't even enter after the AMAs with one of the most discussed performances. Besides, it was still gaining spins when it's digital fall started. You are wrong. Like stated before, any song that consistently stays in the top 11-20 is fair game for Pop radio PDs. They know that there are rotating songs, especially at certain times of the year. They also have to balance their playlists with a mixture of ballads, dance, R&B, and rap collab songs. They might consider trying to balance males, females, groups and teen artists. They also might consider if the song is a debut, second, third, fourth, etc. single. At any given time, there will be several songs in the top 20 that Pop won't even consider playing. I don't care to argue this. It's hard to look at it objectively for many fans. Then don't. And aren't you a fan? Well, I'm the same. Many here are the same. Fans who like to chart watch and a--lyze numbers, despite who their "faves" are. I just think villionizing another artist for being successful makes our fanbase look bitter and cheap. Sure, but that's not what I'm doing. I'm just simply looking at the radio stats and patterns and drawing conclusions. The music boards I belong to, who have fans of many artists, feel the same about this obvious and unprecedented radio bias.

Klou 2,414
Taylor can easily debut at #1. Meghan is selling around or below 300K, so if Taylor can debut above 500K with a bit of streaming and radio then she's got it.

A 200k difference in sales won't be enough the 100M Al and 8M streams that AATB will be having by next week. Although it most likely going to have a massive radio deal so it'll just depend on streaming.
