Essence 232
Thats not true. Dark Horse had AMAZING sales:airplay ratio even BEFORE it was a single. why do people keep pulling this up? Everyone knows Dark Horse was an exception.
Mills 446
Why are you guys all mentioning DH though? One single doesn't make the rule and we all know that DH's performance was not something usual. Aside from her lead singles since TD (which all benefited from strong first-week sales thanks to hype AND also first-week strong radio support akin to BTW's and mostly all other leads), E.T. debuted decently as a post-album single. It sold more than 100k during its first week as an official single (its airplay at that time naturally wasn't that massive), but I've to admit Kanye being featured on it helped a lot. It's basically seen as a "new song", and that surely drove all those sales. Be that as it may, it still took almost a month before radio, particularly Pop, fully pushed it to the top. E.T. was already a digital sales hit even before becoming a full-blown radio smash. As for the rest, yeah, their status as digital sales hits were all driven by incredible radio success. That's clearly undeniable. And so does the fact that most hits are driven by their airplay, unless they go viral online.
Dangerous Man 9,245
Still, it doesn't change the fact that Katy's success is MOSTLY from radio support. Deal with it. "A little less conversation and a little more touch my body."

I agree and I don't say that she didn't have big digital sellers as well but most of her singles have become massive because of Airplay. Also I agree that a massive hit needs airplay obviously, the difference is that with Katy radio is declaring her songs as smash hits and gives them tons of aiplay while other artists including Gaga need to prove that their song is a hit first and then claim the airplay.
Mills 446
15 13 KATY PERRY Birthday 7041 5873 1168 42.671 +128 Spins -59 Bullet +0.711 Audience Radio isn't interested anymore Birthday is now scheduled to be performed at this year's Billboard Music Awards via satellite from her tour. If that promo spot still couldn't push this single to the top 20 on iTunes, it's safe to say this will be just another Thinking of You-sized hit for her. Anyway, if only Gaga could be able to do the same and perform via satellite to at least give life to G.U.Y....

Mills 446
who watches that awards show anyway :idk: Any music-oriented program would be really helpful at this point. Last year, the Billboard Music Awards was watched by over 9.5 million. That's a lot, and more importantly, it drew 4.6 million viewers among the 18-49 demographic, the most active in terms of actually purchasing.
