Retep 0
Not surprising in the least, after the thread here where no one knew (or cared) that her album leaked it spelled disaster. If you even look at the GMA performance not one person in the crowd seemed genuinely interested. I would've imagined at least 50k just based on Bang Bang but this is a mess. hpmcmill 1,955
It's sad because she has one of the best voices in the industry IMO-- and she's always pleasant to those who have worked with her, etc.
StrawberryBlond 14,313
Wow, I had no idea it was that bad. I thought Beyonce had definitely sold a million by this point, but guess not. This is why I don't understand why people are calling this era her peak and the biggest she's ever been. The US's biggest numbers this year is pretty much in line with the UK's biggest numbers, which is not a good thing as America has always had marginally bigger sales than the UK. Going platinum in America has always been easy and you don't even have to have a #1 single to do it, which is very different to other countries. But the major turnaround this year suggests there needs to be some sort of intervention. Taylor and 1D are still to release their albums and they're guaranteed to open huge, but it won't be like it was in previous years. 1D won't hit 1 million with just a month's worth left of sales before 2015. I was sure that Taylor wouldn't debut with 1 million this time, but after hearing this piece of information and taking into account that so many albums opened below expectations this year (sometimes by 100k or more), I'm wondering if she'll even get in the 880-900k range. Maybe those predicting 500-600k aren't far off the mark. If so, she might manage just under 1 million by the end of the year, but it'll be so close. In the face of all this, the fact that C2C debuted about industry predictions and is still in the top ten after 3 weeks is nothing short of amazing. However, it can't be just hackers leaking and illegal downloads... Look at the QUALITY of pop music... It's been declining since 2010/11 Albums from our top pop artists got really fillerish and promo was lacking everywhere from everyone... The only promo from peoplewas radio and big award shows THIS. I hate when these articles are nearly always followed by a bunch of money-hungry industry types saying piracy is the one and only reason why music is selling less and there needs to be stricter laws and harsher punishments for piracy. Plenty of albums have sold in the digital age. In fact, most albums are selling better than they were before illegal downloading. People always say how albums sold millions before illegal downloading, but if you actually look back in history at the sales, they are shockingly low, even for the biggest acts of the time. The 50's, 60's and 70's really struggled with sales, partly because music (big vinyl LPs) were so expensive and people didn't have the disposible income they do now. You also needed a turntable and lots of space to hold these massive unweildy records. It wasn't until the 80's that music really started selling in huge amounts, when people's fortunes really began to change. After the recessions, which are still ongoing, the public have had to penny pinch wherever they can and music is seen as a big luxury, reserved for Christmas buys for other people, not for yourself. So many people don't buy any music because they don't have the time to pay attention to it what with the high demands from employment nowadays and they certainly don't have the money to buy every good album they hear. Most people I know rarely, if ever, buy music. They don't pirate it, they just don't buy it. Thanks to sites like YouTube, Vevo and streaming services, we can listen to music for free, so plenty of us are just choosing to do that now. It explains why YouTube/Vevo viewership increases every year and videos get to 100 million+ views in no time at all. I think this is to blame more than piracy for decreased sales. And you make a good point about promotion too. There was a distinct lack of any sort of promotion from some of the biggest artists this year. Bar one awards show appearance, most of them (or should I say, their labels) have been sitting back and just expecting their album to sell. Promotion sells albums more than anything else, so I don't know why it hasn't been valued this year. Iggy Azalea has been a huge figure in the US this year, but despite a #3 single with Black Widow, a massive #1 single with Fancy (which was #1 for 7 weeks - the second longest #1 of the year) and high profile features with Ariana Grande, T.I. and J-Lo, her album only peaked at #3 and and sold just under 400k to date. There's something up with that. She's had 3 top 10's and 2 top 20's in the UK, yet her album only went to #5 and has barely sold 100k to date. So, I think promotion does play a huge part, as she's been missing that factor. And yes, I think quality plays a huge role too. Everyone's been going on about how bad music is right now. As we've seen with big sellers like Adele's 21, if people think music is good, they are more than happy to pay for it. The industry just doesn't want to admit that quality sells. They just toss out any old rubbish and expect us to buy it. The public has taken a long overdue stand against this practice. And it's the only way music is going to get better.
