General Charts Discussion - Taylor's 1989 is swiftly coming for 5M+

With all her albums like 75% of the sales are from the USA. Even still with "Red".

While not being local anymore, she's still way bigger in America than outside.

You have to take into context though

selling just under 50K in one day is massive in the UK considering the average debut sales for albums are under 100K.

The biggest debut of 2014 was Ed Sheeran's X which sold 189K in it's first week... which is literally incredible!

An album debuting with 300K in the UK is equivalent to a 1M debut in the US in my eyes, because our market is not that strong.

The biggest ever UK debut was Oasis's Be Here Now which sold 660K in it's first week in the UK...

Arctic Monkeys are the UK's taylor in my eyes, they haven't had an album which hasn't debuted with riddiculous numbers, their debut sold 369K in the UK first week, and each album has sold well.

AM in 2013 sold 160K first week.

Opening with 1 million in 2014 is like opening with 3 million+ in 2000.

yeah, but nowadays most albums don't sell much after 2-3 weeks....

I know these numbers are high for the UK.

I was just talking about worldwide, not only the UK. For Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Beyoncé, ... only about 40% of their albums sales come from the US. With Taylor it was still at about 75% with 'Red'.

Really? I thought sales were fantastic in the 90s?

They were.

I'm saying sales are so low these days that opening with 1 Million is much more impressive than back then.

Taylor is still big with the general public and this is why she consistently has such huge opening sales. She doesn't have to rely only on her fanbase for album sales.
