General Charts Discussion - Taylor's 1989 is swiftly coming for 5M+

What is it about Taylor Swift that makes her this massive album seller? I mean she is isnt a good vocalist, she can't dance, her music is very basic  and generic with no depth or meaning so what makes her so special? I ask this as a FAN so don't come at me with petty responses. I am genuinely curious what is the secret to her success that other girls who are more talented than her can't manage to grasp on.

I've been asking myself the same question for years. I don't get why people are so crazy about Taylor, I just don't. To me, her music is nothing special. But if other people enjoy it, then fine I guess

Not on the albums chart photo-thumb-23394.jpg?_r=1413904015

we can say she is the modern Rihanna... slay... :legend:

Didnt rih's 1st or 2nd album was only certified gold and that was b4 2010?

Meanwhile, Yours Truly has now sold 500k+ copies in d US (no cert yet tho). Hopefully ME will perform the same eventually.

The princess of pop is doing fine. :legend:

However, if you're interested, here are the US record sales (at the minimum) of the major acts who came around in the late 2000s-early 2010s:

1. Rihanna- 69M singles (77.6M if including her #1 collabs) + 10M albums = 79M overall

1. Taylor Swift - 57M singles + 22M albums = 79M overall

2. Katy Perry - 63M singles + 6M albums = 69M overall

3. Lady Gaga - 52m singles + 9.8M albums = 62M overall

4. Bruno Mars - 34.5M singles (46.6M if including hit collabs) + 4.4M albums = 38.9M overall

5. Justin Bieber - 19M singles (as lead) + 8M albums = 26.9M overall

Singles don't count the same as albums. The single tracks should be converted to TEAs. Track Equivalent Albums (TEA) are calculated at a ratio of 10 tracks to 1 equivalent album.

1. Taylor Swift- 57M singles + 22M albums = 27.7 million

2.  Rihanna- 69M singles + 10M albums= 16.9 million

3. Lady Gaga - 52m singles + 9.8M albums = 15 million

4. Katy Perry - 63M singles + 6M albums = 12.3 million

5. Justin Bieber - 19M singles + 8M albums = 9.9 million

6. Bruno Mars - 34.5M singles + 4.4M albums = 7.8 million

Wait...just realized...where is Adele? A quick count of the album and single numbers off of 21 ALONE gives a total of 13 million. That's not even counting 19.

My bad for the possible confusion. I meant overall record sales (i.e. actual / reported album sales + actual / reported digital song sales + other recorded commercial material). The overall numbers I've posted aren't "album sales" for the application of TEA to be needed. They're strictly the combined record sales of the artists mentioned, in the same way how the overall worldwide record sales are usually computed and presented, such as Lady Gaga's 152 million+ WW record sales (27M albums sold + 125M digital tracks sold, as reported by Billboard); Rihanna's 150M+ record sales; Taylor Swift's 110M+ worldwide record sales (30M albums + 80M digital tracks); or The Beatles' estimated "1 billion+ record sales".

Is that US radio? Is it normal for a new song from a new artist to do this well already?

Didn't I mention that she has great album sales, which is a statement that she's successful? The trend I was referring to is the fact that since 2012, new female artists are scoring huge #1 hits with 9-week reigns without quickly scoring another #1 follow-up. This scenario is a notable contrast to what had happened in the late 2000s all the way to 2010 wherein the likes of Rihanna, Gaga, and Katy Perry have scored multiple #1s in a relatively shorter period of time, and that greatly helped them to establish themselves as the leading pop stars of the late 2000s-early 2010s.

It's a bit worrying that (new) female artists of today are struggling to score multiple #1s as quickly as the ones before them despite the popularity they've achieved. We're getting smash records since 2012, but we're barely getting new music superstars (w/ notable media attention outside of their music endeavours, tour receipts, album sales, single sales, social media presence, et.al) comparable to the breakout stars of the late 2000s-early 2010s led by Gaga, Rihanna, Taylor, Katy, Bieber, and Bruno Mars. The only true star who came after this generation was Adele, and she came into the top spotlight in 2011. Lorde's successful, but she's nowhere near to the success of the artists I've mentioned. Same goes to the other breakthrough acts since 2012.

I know you are talking about females here, but if we are looking at singers in general, the only newcomer who seems to have lasting power is Sam Smith, isn't it?

Everybody else is already established or not too relevant

Don't forget about Meghan Trainor, Iggy, and Ariana. They seem like they'll be around awhile.

I hope she does 50k+, but she's releasing in the worst month of the year sales-wise :manicure:
