SNL's TOP 10 Best Sketches of Fall 2013: Gaga No. 1 & 5

HitFix posted their Top 10 Best Sketches of 2013 from SNL and Gaga's "Blockbuster" skit with the rest of the SNL cast was chosen as the BEST SNL sketch of Fall 2013, while the "Talent Pageant" skit with Gaga, came at No. 5! 

 

 

 

1) Blockbuster
As a disclaimer: this is a list of the ten best, not ten funniest, sketches. After all, there are few if any laughs here. But the lyricism is shocking, making this the heir to last Fall’s best sketch “Sad Mouse.†In Kyle Mooney and Beck Bennett, the show inherited two people who do fine sketch work. But these two really know how to tell succinct cinematic tales that have elements of absurdity and humanity intermingled in every frame. The post-Lonely Island world of digital shorts is a bracingly odd mixture of pop parody and muted mini-films. But it’s the most robust and creative part of the show at present. If the sketches get as bold and interesting as its preproduced segments, “SNL†will achieve the type of renaissance that will delight fans of the show.

 

 

 

5) Talent Pageant
Lady Gaga’s final sketch, which featured a bizarre “Sunset Boulevard†vibe, will be the one people will remember about her episode. But this one, in which her stage mom is paired up with equally enthusiastic stage dad John Milhiser, was the crowning live achievement of that installment. Some sketches rely on funny punch lines. This one had those in spades, although the punch lines derived from the choreographed physicality of Gaga/Milhiser working together like seasoned pros. As with a sketch we’ll see at number two, nothing about this was overly complex. But it was a solid sketch idea executed to maximum effect.

 

Gaga is the only guest who appeared twice on the list.
