There is an element of s-xism at taking offence at this coming from a female (like you think, "hey even though I'm gay I'm still better than women.") A girl who was into sports or engineering would take it as a compliment if she was told "she's just like one of the guys" by a guy. I wouldn't appreciate being told that because it means they're saying "hey, you're cool because you're not feminine," as if that's a bad thing.
