New species of cat discovered, the first in 100 years

In 2016, biologist Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz was contacted about a strange-looking wild cat at a sanctuary in Bolivia. The animal had unusual spots, small ears, and a face that made it different from an ordinary domestic cat.

At first, Nogales-Ascarrunz believed the animal was a tiger cat, a species known as Leopardus tigrinus. However, in 2019, she noticed that its large rosettes looked very different from those of tiger cats found in Brazil.

Years later, advanced genetic testing allowed researchers to study the animal’s DNA. Their research showed that the cat was genetically distinct from other known species and had separated from them around 1.4 million years ago.

The scientists proposed naming the new species Leopardus tilcayo, after the local name used for the animal. The species is currently known from Bolivia’s Yungas forests, although scientists still know very little about its behavior, diet, reproduction, or population size.

The discovery also changed scientists’ understanding of tiger cats. What was once considered one species is now understood as a group of several distinct species, showing how much hidden diversity can be revealed through genetic research.

Researchers believe there may be even more undiscovered small wild cat species. Genetic studies could potentially reveal new species in other parts of the world, including Africa and Asia, where small cats are often difficult to study and identify.

The discovery is important for conservation because each newly recognized species must be assessed separately. Nogales-Ascarrunz emphasizes that the natural world still contains many mysteries, and discovering these animals can help scientists understand and protect them.

this was already a known species, we didn't see this cat and went "omg a new cat", we already knew this species but it turns out the family (Leopardus tigrinus) was wrong, that's why we are getting these news.

Still amazing that we are learning.
