The Prismatic tour is easily outselling the ArtRave tour, PRISM is outselling ARTPOP, Katy's getting more youtube views, Katy got nominated for 2 GRAMMYs, Katy has more casual fans, Katy's fanbase isn't declining (like Gaga's), etc. The only thing Gaga is more successful in is Apps. Show me the receipts of Katy's tour outselling Gaga' s tour, so Katy having more tour dates means she's outselling her. Gaga not adding more tour dates, doesn't mean it isn't selling. Gaga not adding more tour doesn't mean it isn't selling. Artists don't add extra dates unless the first date is very close to selling out in a short amount of time. And why should this prove that Applause is a flop and not that S&S was a smash (which it was). Applause is doing OK. But Capitol focuses on everything, including success. What is better, though, long-term? I say focusing on chart success and higher numbers. Why? The media is currently eating Gaga alive, the reviews for ARTPOP were quite bad and everything Gaga does is getting negative press. Why is this? Because she's not doing great on the charts. Media and the GP could care less about tours. Only 1/500 of the US citizens will see Gaga on tour, while 50 million+ people are potential album/single buyers and 250 million+ listen to radio. If Gaga is becoming a touring artist, she will become irrelevant. That means that she has no support from the GP anymore, and that only her fans are supporting her. This has happened to Justin Bieber. He got so much hate, negative press. He only had his fanbase left, and that's all. He might be making ****loads of money, but is he popular? Does he get played on radio? No. Is he in decline? Yes. Why? Because of all the negative press and controversy surrounding him, while he isn't expanding his fanbase because he doesn't have a single on radio or a new music video that appeals to people or something like that. The only thing he has left is his fanbase. I don't want that to happen with Gaga, but if Interscope/Gaga keep focusing on getting more money by doing less pricy promotion, rather than getting more customers and building a fanbase and getting more people to hear your album by doing a lot of promotion which could be a long-term investment. Gaga needs promotion to do well, Gaga needs to be exposed, Gaga needs to have more customers, but that's not possible because some people refuse to buy or watch or see or listen to anything Gaga-related, because of all the controversy in the past. Or will not give ARTPOP a chance, because of the negative review they read in the newspaper, and they'll assume the album is as terrible as the reviews make it sound. Or they won't even know Gaga has a new album out, because they can't know, because there's no successful single or big promotion going on. Madonna hasn't had hit since the begining of Gaga's career her last album broke the recordof BTw for biggest drop yet her tour gross was 300m it sure that it's sweet to see one or 2 hits here and there but Katy would need 60 single selling avarage of 5M each to top 300M sales - how much MDNA tour has grossed And Madonna is legend but she also has countless of flops singles + albums .... so #1's and press love is not everything Exactly, it's not everything. But generally speaking, a commercial success starts everything in any kind of business. I just find sustaining equally important as to achieving if we're into the long run. As for the artists you've mentioned, most of them have unfortunately fell flat to transcend their success beyond their breakthrough albums and/or singles. Something Gaga and her contemporaries from Katy to Bruno to even Justin Bieber have successfully done, and hence they're considered as a more successful act than others.
