They're not that relatable tbh All three are mostly in the 1st category. Poker Face is relatable. It's catchy, but also about keeping distance from someone, it's a relationship metaphor. Same for Telephone and Paparazzi. Paparazzi is taking a cultural phenomenon, but once again makes it relatable because it's about love and obsession. Alejandro, same thing - it's taking a subject but bringing it down to the listener's level. Applause is really ALL about LG's experience, but not generalized in any way. She is singing about critics, about art, about Koons - and applause, basically saying 'give me applause'. I am not saying it's the wrong thing to do, it's up to the artist. I am just saying that unless you ALREADY consider Lady Gaga within your circle of influence, the song doesn't draw you in by its lyrical content. It doesn't inspire you, it doesn't make you feel something of your own, it asks you to RELATE to Lady Gaga's personal experience which most likely has NOTHING to do with any of your own. I think she needs to know the world in all it's ugly and glory before entering it herself. Mess...the only one I like from Prism Aw. Well, music and art are relative, hon, so if you like it, it's awesome:) Im sure there are plenty things I like you would hate, so that's what makes life interesting!:) Also Unconditionally, to me, is more of a Celine kind of song. It's more of a vehicle for vocal power.... which as we know K doesn't really possess... so it may be part of the problem. Performed by someone like Celine live it could become a hit - maybe. Yes it deffo has notes in there Katy will always struggle with. I'd like Gaga to collaborate with a great Dutch DJ/producer like Armin van Buuren or Afrojack if she wants to be on top of the EDM genre and not sound dated as some of the sounds she used for ARTPOP. Sometimes it's because we want to get closer to the artist/personality we admire. But even then, not really. Mostly it's because they are soundtrack to our lives. Love or hate Roar, it's a catchy song wrapped up in an inspiring message. It's very cliche, yes. But it makes people feel like 'yes, we can' sort of thing. and it's easy to sing/hum. The biggest and long standing hits, IMO, are those that are truly personal to the artist but also general at the same time, while unique and catchy at the same time. A hard one to get. The moment you try for the first one, the last three go out the window. And if you go for the latter ones, the first one is gone. Compare Applause to Bowie's Fame. He sings about Fame, but he takes an onlooker's role. He is singing from the perspective of someone maybe within it, but from the bird's eye's view. So as a listener you 'get' it, because most of us are 'outside' of it, and yet you also get a glimpse of what it is like on the inside: hollow etc. LG assumes in Applause that the listener is ALREADY part of her clique. And by doing so, she doesn't give away anything that a person who is not could latch on to emotionally, besides a nice hook. Yes it deffo has notes in there Katy will always struggle with. We all deal with monsters inside ourselves and inside our loved ones, too, so almost anyone can relate to that. Yes, performer vs. audience. But still, how many performers do you know? are you one? Most of the audience are not performers. Now, if she was singing: Give US the Applause, or we'll give you the Applause. To me the song does not interact emotionally with the listeners besides asking them to give her the Applause that she loves. And that's fine, once again, it's just my opinion.
