Michael Jackson, Madonna, Britney all lost popularity after a few years and require a genuine hit like any other artist to reach the top again. Michael Jackson and Madonna both saw decades of success before their decline. Jackson's was ended by the whole pedo controversy, Madonna's ended when she back talked the government after a terrorist attack, and Britney's decline was after a mental breakdown. What I'm saying is that Gaga isn't comparable to these people. She's been popular for 5-6 years, and is facing backlash for not being girly enough. A little less success and way less extreme examples of decline than your examples. The positive side of that is I'm saying that her shinyness hasn't worn off yet. Maybe she isn't a novelty act like she was in TF, but she still has the ability to be considered fierce and "in." I think she is just going through backlash right now, and not an overall declination of her popularity. Maybe her Material Girl days are over, but she can still have a Ray of Light and a Music. And if this is her backlash era, things aren't that bad. There are many backlash eras where the artist doesn't get a single hit, and fails to have a single record go gold. The fact that it's getting more radio support now that Capitol has officially announced that they're supporting it as a Rhythmic single, the effect is showing I guess.
