Lady Gaga: ‘My dream was to piss off Madonna‘ (Attitude Mag)

I think people are taking the punk rock comment too literally. Gaga's already talked about how the scene she came from tended to favor more indie-ish singer-songwriter-y type stuff, and that's what eventually led her to wanting to sing pop and go-go dance to metal while making hair-spray fireballs. Because what is "countercultural" is entirely dependent upon context.

Besides, by defining itself in relation to the dominant culture, punk is inextricably linking its identity and continued existence to the perpetuation of that dominant culture. Punk always and only exists vis-à-vis the culture it is supposedly rebelling against. Ergo, punk was dead before it even began, and this is a notion Gaga has openly admitted to playing with. She's punk rock in certain contexts, which is certainly the most anybody can say.

GAGA is more than a pop artist. She’s definitely got that rebel punk rocker inside of her. She doesn’t behave like your typical pop star……we all KNOW that!

Anyway, I am glad she decided not to whine about the fact that Madonna sang some of her song even if it was a diss. It clearly was because at the concert Madonna sang the “Born This Way†verse and then right after that she sang parts of her song “She’s Not Me.â€

So GAGA mission accomplished. You did piss Madonna off and you’re only 27! :worship:

"‘I have to be really honest, I was completely kind of floored that Madonna was singing my song on her stage every night!’ Gaga told Attitude magazine.

‘I mean, Madonna’s… she’s Madonna. I looked up to her for a long time. I’m not quite sure what her intention was – to do that in the show, but I don’t really care.

‘I think playing into the gossip of the tabloids and, I guess the fodder of the competition, that’s just not what I’m about.

‘She chooses to use her voice the way she chooses to use hers and I choose to use mine the way I use mine.

She added: ‘All it meant to me was that Madonna Ciccone was singing my song on her stage and I’m 27!"

I love the bolded parts so, so much.   :worship:

She knows that people (including Madonna) think that, to varying degrees. What Gaga means is that she doesn't know if Madonna intended her performance as a tribute, or a dis. Or perhaps both. Madonna also was coy about that. (Personally, I would've assumed it was a tribute, like all the other covers Madonna's done in concert, if it weren't for the addition of "She's Not Me" at the end, and most of all, the video backdrop.)

I don't think it was a tribute actually. Knowing Madonna, it was her attempt at making the world seem brave and fearless. It worked for her, but I don't see why Gaga can't see it

I don't even know what you mean by that.

Gaga said she ‘truthfully believes’ Born This Way and Express Yourself does not sound alike.

‘I don’t need to take anybody’s torch,’ she said.

She shouldn't have said that.

Well they don't sound alike imo
