but art is subjective so how can anyone really tell her what she's doing wrong, it's different for everyone

You know, I'm just putting it out there: being an artist doesn't make you exempt from critique and criticism.

Being an artist doesn't make you exempt from critique and criticism.

For the last 3 years of high school I took art classes. I had an amazing teacher who helped and supported me in becoming an artist, and you know what a big part of that was? When I'd try something and she'd say: "You can do better" or "Are you pushing yourself?" She respected my vision and intention in my works, but she knew when I wasn't putting in enough effort, or wasn't approaching something from the right direction. And sometimes I'd get annoyed -- it's art, right? you can't do it wrong, right? -- but when I tried again and came up with something better, I was thankful.

In contrast, my friends would always want to look at my folio. They'd leaf through carefully and ooh and aah at all the work, saying "You're so good!" even when they were looking at my worst work. That's what friends and family do -- they lift you up. I knew what was wrong with the drawings they liked -- not enough definition, inconsistent tone, wonky proportions, etc -- but they couldn't see it. And bless them for it, who doesn't love praise? I'm not saying my friends and family should shut up, but what I'm saying is this: between constructive criticism and critique and pleasant positivity, I know which one helped me grow and get better.

If Gaga wants to be an artist, she needs to take constructive criticism. From a contemporary art perspective, ARTPOP (as an album, era and "experience") presents some interesting potential but is a bit lacking in cohesion and a discernible theme so far. She's done great things so far -- the Applause video is amazing, her VMA performance was really clever and she's delivering wonderful vocals, but she needs to know that for an artist, critique and misunderstandings are daily life.

Part of being an artist is the terrifying and exhilarating moment when you finish a work and step away from it. I've actually got a funny story about that moment:

I was finishing a mixed media painting/drawing/collage on a canvas. It was inspired by Marilyn Monroe, Basquiat, Picasso, Rauschenberg and Warhol to an extent. It was madness -- I was possessed. I needed desperately to have it finished that afternoon, and I had stayed back late to finish it. So when I finally stepped away after finishing the eyes with charcoal, I felt relieved. You know what my friend said as soon as I finished?

"Um, Andy? I don't know how to say this but ... it kind of looks like a p*nis. Is that intentional?"

It wasn't intentional. She was right. There was an accidental p*nis shape created by the dress. I had completely missed it the whole way through but -- there it was. I put the work out there (I birthed it, if we're talking Gaga) and it was out of my protection. We both laughed about it, and I still think it's funny, but that's what happens when you put work out. It's vulnerable and out in the open. You can't protect it any more, and if someone's gonna say "this could have been better" or "it kind of looks like a phallus" well, you can't stop them.

Gaga had a long time to work on ARTPOP, and now it's out. I think it's a great album, not her best, but still fantastic. She very clearly knows what she's doing and she has made art BUT what she needs to do is let it exist in the open. Let it breathe, let it be praised and attacked, worshiped and derided, lampooned and idolized. That is what an artist must do.

Step back from the canvas and let it be received.

(side note: big difference between constructive criticism and "this is crap go die" -- we all know the difference and you know I'm not defending the latter. also I am very tired and I don't really know what I've written. peace)

I'd be happy tbh if that were the case. He's a pig.

That might explain the documentary, CLLG and DWUW not happening.

same!!!! :applause: get him out !!! and if this is the case it serves her right for working with him

I would be thrilled if they had "creative differences"...but it would be too good to be true, thus it will never happen.

Terry is just a poor man's version of Juergen Teller. I'm sure Terry is nice to her and all, but his pics of her always feel creepy/pervy, and when they're not exploitive they're basic.

Bring on the Ruth Hogben era. Her pics of her are always so beautiful and interesting.

we can hope can't we! :whitney: Speaking the truth here sis, finally people see it...his photography is so average  :reductive: there are so many wonderful artists she could be working with why get tied down to one crappy one

I hope she does NOT join the 27 club crying1.gif

Britney appeared to have mastered the game of fame but it ended up being an act then she couldn't do it anymore, i think that's what's happening with gaga but i hope she doesn't go trough the **** britney went trough

Britney was always a puppet, first the puppet of her parents and then of her labels. She was never a master, but always a tool for others, her entire life is based on this. Sad but true.

And Gaga said, it's not about interscope.

Mr Terry Richardson is one of those guys and he's done this to MANY girls. He can be an angel with LG because she is a superstar. But his track record with others is far less appealing.

yes i agree its horrible, the thing is though he's not even that great Inez & Vinoodh make much more beautiful art that he ever will they photograph gaga amazingly ....i don't get gaga sometimes, she preaches double standards

I'm sorry but GAGA was on top of the world in 2010. And 2009. And 2011. :laughga:

Ke$ha was never even close to being the magnitude of a star that Gaga is and her situation is very different. Kesha at her best is similar in success to Gaga now. ARTPOP =/= Warrior.

:applause: preach... gaga is a ****ing superstar shes on the same level as some of the greats

Ke$ha is some lil teeny bopper :laughga: not even in the same league honey

Elizabeth

She said the problem isn't with Interscope on LM. Honestly I think there's a lot going on here that we have no idea about.

I think it's a case of fans putting 2 and 2 together and making 5. We don't need a petition.
