VforVendetta 2,024
By the way the article is written it does not look like they really stan for her (pseudo-controversy), they even say Telephone is better And that while BR is fun Venus is trying to be something more. I mean if BR is fun why can't Venus be? When has she ever said Venus needs to mean something profound? I hate how critics always say that she tries to hard when in fact she always says her songs are meant to be fun to dance to... Sis, those songs are good but masterpieces? :ghostney: For Gaga songs I'd reserve masterpieces for: Bad Romance, Dance In The Dark, The Edge of Glory, Heavy Metal Lover, ARTPOP, Venus. And MANiCURE for me. And Heavy Metal Lover? Sis no! What about Bloody Mary, Americano and Electric Chapel? Of course it depends on everyone's tastes... kupo 201
Now Telephone and Bad Romance are pop classic - those silly hipster probably didn't think that in 2010. Same way people bashed Britney when she was on top, now respect that period in hindsight. Slant stuck with Gaga when everyone else--especially the hipster contingent--was already abandoning her, though. Sal Cinquemani gave BTW 4/5, and the album ended up their number 3 of 2011, behind only Lykke Li and PJ Harvey's albums (pretty damn good company, if you ask me). They defended it with this GREAT quote: To call Born This Way one of the year's best albums will come as heresy only to the pop-, queer-, and woman-averse who Lady Gaga assails throughout this magnum opus with the force of a Gatling gun. Slant's totally on board with Gaga's camp and queer aesthetic. But people who honestly heard this song and thought it was only going to be praised to the high heavens and would be a sure-fire smash were just deluding themselves. Responses like this will be common. Frankly, I'm hoping Cinquemani still writes for Slant and that he ends up reviewing the whole album, because I think there's a better shot the outcome will be positive for her Metacritic score. People don't appreciate big hits and daring songs until after the star is fully respected. And taht doesn't happen until well past-peak. Let them talk. Gaga will have history on her side and she knows it.

When everybody was jumping ship, they were one of the few major publications that stood strong and were like, "f*ck y'all, this [born This Way] is a pop masterpiece." Many also didn't praise TEOG in the beginning and now everyone calls it a masterpiece and how it embraces clasic pop music and Jazz...
