Getting an " artificial" #1 by buying the single for other people, gifting and all sounds like cheating to me and is doing the song a disfavor in my opinion. The higher it gets artificially the bigger the drop will be when people stop buying that way I agree with you with most of what you said. It is pretty risky to have an artificial #1. I mean, there's already articles about Applause's marketing "tactics" and that's damaging the reputation of the song having longevity as a #1. My only hope is that Applause is a grower and that the GP will end up really loving the song if they hear it several times on the radio. Apparently it is the most popular video right now and it is quickly going to surpass Katy's lyric video. iTunes is only a fraction of what it takes to top the Billboard chart.
