KingAlanI 3
Description: I fit new additions into my audio-collection organizational system one-by-one as I add them, to avoid an unruly mess. I aim to share this organizational work as much as specific files that are sorted in this manner. I present a Lady Gaga example, but this system could be adapted for one's music in general and other particular artists that one has a lot of material from. (heck, I got the idea of using YYYY.MM.DD date prefixes for any live material from a collection of Led Zeppelin bootlegs in particular.) I use {drive}:\Music\Pop\Lady Gaga\ as the main folder (which fits my usual {drive}:\Music\<Genre>\<Artist>\ format). I have subfolders for albums, which simply contain the audio files for the songs on the album. In Gaga's case, that means Born This Way, Christmas Tree [single], Stefani Germanotta Band - Red and Blue EP, The Cherrytree Sessions EP, The Fame, The Fame Monster, Portal In The Park, Walmart Soundcheck and 'Other'. Music Video Audio Versions and Songs Written By Lady Gaga For Others are unofficial 'album names' I use. However, since I have so much other stuff of hers, that's where things get interesting, as it wouldn't suffice to simply have a whole bunch more album folders. 'A Capella And Instrumental', 'Remixes' and 'Track Stems' each have subfolders for each song, and then the relevant files. They're named in the 'Song Title (Version).filetype' format. 'Demos' is sorted first by which album the demo was for. 'Concerts' is sorted by date (which makes sorting by tour somewhat redundant, but eh...) 'Live Appearances' is also sorted by date. [i generally use a 'Concerts' category for material from full shows and a 'Live Appearances' category for shorter performances on TV, radio and the like.] 'YYYY.MM.DD - Location/Name' easily keeps things labeled and sorted in chronological order - I use this for any artist's live material, in the folder name and the metadata 'album' tag. If I have only year, or only year and month, I still use that information. When sorting one's library by artist, it keeps their live and studio material separate. When sorting by album, it shows one artist's live material alongside other artists' live material from the same timeframe. Official releases of live material tend to be sorted like regular albums. Sometimes, I have only part of a show, such as the Maria Aragon duet from 2011.03.03 - Toronto. Yet I put such things in the same folder structure as full shows. Some of my full show recordings have between-song interludes/speeches as separate files/tracks, some have them appended before or after the main songs. Either way, track numbers (in both the filenames and in the metadata 'trakc number' tag) keep each show's songs in order. I link to separate cover images from the audio files, rather than embedding the image files in the audio files. This provides easy separate access to the image, and prevents duplicating the image file across every song on the album. I put things like (feat. so-and-so), (Remix Name), (Acoustic), and/or (cover)/(X cover) at the end of the song-title tag. Mashups of songs from the same artist are sorted with that artist. However, mashups of songs from different artists are in a separate Mashups genre category, and are often sorted with other mashups by the same mashup creator. The artist tag reflects the name the performer currently uses, as opposed to previous stage names or the performer's birth name. So, earlier material is still labeled as 'Lady Gaga', not 'Lady Gaga' or 'Stefani Germanotta'. Another example of that would be alternative rapper MC Lars, once known as Lars Horris or MC Lars Horris; even that earlier material is still labeled as 'MC Lars'. However, when I fill in composer/songwriter tags, I tend to use the birth names of the people in question. Album tags are generally related to the folder structure. Remixes: Song Name and Track Stems: Song Name keep those general categories sorted together in the album metadata. I use separate Genre folders for different rock subgenres, and the concept would of course apply to other genres. Sometimes classifications can be fuzzy, however fine-grained you're trying to go. I tend to keep all of an artist's music in the same Genre folder, even if some of their material ventures into different territory or was covered/remixed in a different style. However, solo careers or other bands involving some of the same people are treated as separate artists. Sometimes, multi-artist albums are given their own folder in the appropriate genre folder, rather than having each individual song in the appropriate artist folder. Screenshot examples: http://www.mediafire.com/?usfh3fdfmax9e Alan, that's excellent. In coallating your collection and my collection on the drive, I'm reaching the sobering conclusion that I'm going to have to do your method of year-month-date organization to make head and tail of my Lives, because the Gaga Lives are the messiest area of my collection. Yours was flawless, following that formula. whew :) Thanks for posting that sound advice. You're the only person I know of MORE delightfully obsessive about this than myself! ChicaSkas 22,941
Yep. I help fuel Chica's audio habit, and vice versa. Matheiu, and you, were both the hugest inspiration to me last year as this slowly became my calling here. I loved, and still love, the concept of everything in one place. That idea obsessed and continues to obsess me, with a hint of madness because even I know it's kind of impossible. But I still try. Every download, every day, persuing the dream :) Do YOU own the 4' by 6' Perfect Illusion promo Poster? Will pay you for it.
