Key words "I'm sick of women being portrayed this way".

She didn't say Selena wasn't a feminist, she is again making a larger point that seems to sail over the heads of a lot of people.

Women are portrayed as very clingy and submissive way more often than guys are.

The very opening lines of Come and Get It are:

“It’s an open invitation / I’ll be sitting here real patient / All day, all night I’ll be waiting standby.â€

Instead of the message being "I like you, but you are not into me so I will move on" there is this very clingy "I will wait forever and I will always be there for you until I die - even if you are not there for me".

If this was a one off example then there wouldn't really be an issue. There are times that both men and women feel weak or are in an unhealthy relationship. The difference is that women are constantly portrayed in this fashion while men are hardly ever.

You know the other thread where you guys were bashing Lorde? She pointed out Lana's lyrics "I will love you to the end of time/ I will wait a million years". Notice how it seems to be the exact same portrayal of women? She is using specific examples to make a more general statement about how women are portrayed in pop music.

Men are hardly ever portrayed in that manner, the power balance is completely disproportionate.

But honestly why does Lorde feel like she needs to point this out? No one really cares about her opinion besides the 2 Stan's she has. She is just coming out as an ignorant b---h. She seems to think her opinion is better than everyone else's. I'm getting tire of her attitude. The fact that she is 16 makes it, she acts like she's so wise.l when she still has a lot of growing up to do

Idk I am tired of her.

Where is that babe or Bebe person to defend her now? I'm curious to see what they have to say haha

Right here. I have already tried to explain what is going over most peoples heads.

"I'm sick of women being portrayed this way".

The Lana lyric she quoted yesterday:

"I will love you to the end of time/ I will wait a million years".

The Selena song:

“It’s an open invitation / I’ll be sitting here real patient / All day, all night I’ll be waiting standby.â€

Along with other examples she hasn't mentioned

Miley Cyrus:

"Don't you ever say I just walked away, I will always love you."

Adele:

"I hate to turn up out of the blue uninvited, but I couldn't stay away, I couldn't fight it. I'd hoped you'd see my face and that you'd be reminded that for me it isn't over."

Taylor Swift"

"Please don't be in love with someone else, please don't have somebody waiting on you. Please don't be in love with someone else, please don't have somebody waiting on you."

Women are ALWAYS portrayed in this manner. There is this constant desperate "I will always need you" "I will always be there for you, and I will always love you. Even if you don't love me back". There is a plethora of songs from women about how some relationship is failing but she needs him or she will always love him and it isn't something you see with men.

Lorde is using specific examples to make a point about how women are represented in pop music in general.

Yeah but honestly people sing those songs because they are catchy no one really looks soo deep into it like she does. She is judging other people's writing styles when honestly it's none of her business.

It is actually pretty important. You might be used to female artists waving politely and smiling but occasionally you find one with an actual opinion and she has every right to express that opinion.

"No one really cares about her opinion besides the 2 Stan's she has"

Shallow criticism. Doesn't disprove her claim you are just implying her point is invalid because she is not successful.

"She is just coming out as an ignorant b---h."

Ignorant b---h? You are really calling her a b---h because she dared to express her opinion? Another shallow criticism/insult that doesn't actually prove that her point is invalid.

"The fact that she is 16 makes it, she acts like she's so wise"

Another shallow criticism. Her age has nothing to do with the situation. Doesn't disprove her point.

Does she need to be an old rich man in order to express an opinion?

Bit rich coming from lorde

She is renown through my school as being a hor (people here went to her school)

She needs to sit the **** down before Karma rips off her weave and pisses on the grave of her career.

Don't get me wrong, I love her music it's just she seems utterly pretentious and hypocritical.

Good pointgs.

There is the occasional male pop song (Bruno Mars' Granade) like this, but I think the reaction of most guys is "what a silly pathetic wuss."

Exactly. Nobody thinks twice about the fact that women are constantly portrayed in such a desperate and clingy fashion. It is something nobody thinks about because it is so common place and nobody ever talks about it.

These people are putting the message out there, do you really think those messages should just be left alone? That because you have freedom of expression you have freedom from criticism?

These messages are being sent out throughout the media every day but people like you don't think it is acceptable to criticise these double standards and negative perceptions of women that are so constant and relentless.

I think her real mistake recently is not dissing other artists, but rather not realizing anything and everything she says will be repeated out of context and taken seriously. She's young and newly famous; she'll learn soon enough.

Bingo. I don't think she knows about internet pop stan wars either.

She sounds like an intelligent college girl a--lyzing song lyrics in popular culture. Nothing petty or personal about her comments.

But they themselves choose to be portrayed in this manner.

So? The women in blurred lines chose to objectify themselves. Miley Cyrus chose to objectify herself by grinding half naked on a fully clothes man.

Lana Del Rey chose to portray herself in this manner while the men on the other covers wore suits.

It doesn't change the fact that men and women are portrayed in completely different ways in the media and that the way women are portrayed is often rather demeaning.

Yeah definitely.

There are a couple of examples of men being portrayed like this, such as Grenade by Bruno Mars, but is is rather disproportionate.

I think it is also important to recognise that in Grenade the woman is portrayed in a rather negative light (Tell the devil I said, hey, when you get back to where you're from. Mad women, bad women, that's just what you are)

While in the examples I posted the man is glorified and clearly still desirable.

But that argument would work more if they were forced into it, but when it's them who are agreeing with and wanting to do that type of work then it's obviously what they feel works best for them. If Lorde doesn't approve of that then by all means she can say it as much as she wants, it is her opinion, but her opinions will come with criticism and disagreements. I just feel that if it's the artist's personal choice to be portrayed in whatever way they feel works, then by all means go for it.

Take a moment to think of just flexibility, love, and trust~
