Also, UK will just keep looking influence and global power/ growth and wealth, process already taking place. Even if everyone did get independence—which they won’t—England can function entirely fine on its own because of the relationships to the rest of the world geopolitically alone. That’s been shown as the most likely outcome of any independence referendums now, plus the UK government has to agree to referendums in the first place. Which currently Andy Burnham has basically said he won’t. In the UN specifically, England takes priority and we wouldn’t suddenly all become separate nations across the world stage, we’d still be called the UK with the English government representing us. That’s already something that’s part of a potential breakup that’s been discussed and agreed upon (should it ever happen.) Northern Ireland—because of the Good Friday Agreement—would have to de facto back into a unified Ireland. Which would cause massive civil unrest since one is Catholic and one is Protestant. So they wouldn’t actually become “independent” in any sense. Scotland would lose massive amounts of money and funding, plus the majority of all industry in the UK is in England, which means they’d have to em masse do things like fracking, building factories, creating new jobs, creating trade deals with the EU should they wish etc. Scotland has far more unpopulated countryside—which would mean they’d have to accommodate a growing population (since emigrating would become harder, and borders would become stricter) by building massive amounts of housing, public buildings, entire cities, roads etc all of which would have massive Environmentalist concerns. And then Wales would be the worst off, because they have literally nothing independently. They’d have to at least have a major alliance with England for almost every resource. Except maybe Water. But analysts have already said as a prediction, should this ever happen, it would take at LEAST 20 years after an independence referendum for everyone to become fully independent. England would take about 5 on its own. Because the other nations would have to deal with well over 1000 pieces of legislation, law, trade deals, defence deals, weaponry deals. England would remain practically the same bar some of its Scottish and Welsh resources. So could it happen? Yeah absolutely. But will it happen overnight or have any impact instantly? No. It would take until the current reign of political figures are dead and gone to even START taking effect. By which time the next generation may have reconsidered it anyway. Independence would only happen if a large majority of the population voted and agreed upon it, which currently isn’t happening. Because you’d need a lot of young voters to turn out and say they want it, because it won’t take effect properly until the under 30s are almost at retirement anyway. Anything that can be argued as a contributing factor in a potential rupture in the UK, equally is a pressure facing the EU as a consituent membership body. 18 hours ago, gagzus said: Because we also then have a new generation of voters, as well as previous voters who’ve lived through not being in the EU. I personally voted remain, but equally I must say my life hasn’t changed really since we left, I’ve just had a longer trip through customs that’s about it. But it’s no different than if we went outside of Europe for a holiday. Yeah....I think you just aren't really appreciating what Brexit actually has impacted since 2020. The UK cost of living crisis, the decline in investment etc are all impacted heavily by Brexit. It's a compounding factor on many of the issues we're facing as a national economy. Not the sole reason. But it's really flippant and silly to think it's only impacted your walk through customs. When in reality, it's impacted the price you're paying to eat alongside the APRs you pay on credit and the level of taxation you face. Oh I know that, I’m just pointing out it hasn’t impacted me (at least negatively) personally, because I’m blessed enough to not have to worry about the shifts in things financially. Sure things have changed but not majorly for me personally, yeah things are more expensive etc but I can still afford them. But doesn’t change the fact I want EVERYONE to be able to be on the same footing as me, and acknowledge my experience isn’t everyone’s.
