I don't understand why people ask for celebrities to represent working class people, and then when they do it they push them away because "oh they are being too out of touch" when all they did is give the support that was asked for.

We/I did not ask Slayyyter to become a moralizer. I think you refer to Taylor and the many unrealistic expectations people have towards her. She (Slayyyter) wasn't even criticized and wasn't up for discussion. She made and makes great music, and no one had a problem with it. In my playlist, she is even remembered as the "most luxury" celebrity endorser. Now she became contradictory.

The thing is when you go from this:

Slayyyter in 2023

prada.jpg

and then make an interview like that, it doesn't make you look credible

(yes, I know the video is supposed to be satirical by the creators but the whole era she was constantly promoting and displaying luxury, in lyrics, music and fashion. Even having a $-sign as logo. And nothing suggests it’s critically satirical, because the satire is so perfect that it’s indistinguishable from the actual glamorization of luxury found elsewhere and it effectively reproduces luxury promotion because a hot woman wears and buys something exclusive and hot. In the end, she made it clear to her Youtube viewers: Hollywood is dangerous but exciting, and the scene is cool and luxury is part of it. I can’t see any difference from the Kim Petras era, which also promoted luxury fashion and was not supposed to be satirical. Kim Petras could as well have made this video and claim it to be a lifestyle.)

It shows that you can have fun with luxury.  I have no problem with people who love luxury. But I have a problem when people say they are uncomfortable with luxury when they voluntarily lived an entire era endorsing it and were very comfortable with it.

You know, in manys ways Slayyyter's Hollywood is similair to Madonna's Hollywood. Madonna visually mocked the extreme lengths people go to for Hollywood perfection, depicting scenes of Botox injections and body modification, but in the end.... what did Madonna do with herself? What is the meaning of satire if the person actually becomes their own satire? Then perhaps it wasn't satire, but a reflection. Then it is no longer satire, but a self-fulfilling prophecy. I don't consider any of them satire, but rather a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Also the statement "But the majority of the country is struggling to put food on the tables for their children." is very wrong. Inflation impoverishes, but there is still a long way to go before one is actually poor and if that were the case there would be daily mass-protests across all states like in Latin America or Asia.  I look on the streets and see overweight kids with iPhones. Yes, it is an idiom that is more than only actual food but Americans are living beyond their means in categories other than food, too.

Parents worry about paying for their children's college education or keeping up with mortgage payments, but not about food for their children or other "basic things" - at least not the majority and far form the majority. It is rather an increasing number of a minority. America is in the Top 10 of the richest countries in the world and if micro-states and small states are excluded, it is in the Top 5 of the world's wealthiest countries. Especially American parents are also concerned about effects that actually arise from wealth and consumption that presuppose wealth. Like when their child who isn't invited to a birthday party because they can't organize an elaborate $600 event party of their own (while the kids peers host such parties and expect it, too, to belong to their friends group), whereas in the rest of the world, kids birthday celebrations aren't quite so lavish and you could make a party for less than $100. So wealth creates new problems that parents are struggling about, unique in American society (and other rich countries) and are rather a sign of how wealthy America actually is.

Overweight positively correlates with poverty in USA and poor people eat more and are unhealthier. Food is a mass product in America. When people are strugglying and worrying, they are actually more likely to eat and "put food on the table".

Many financial problems arise because too much money is spent on consumption that goes beyond what is necessary for instance, when children have high-end, expensive smartphones instead of mid-range models, or when they get a high-end gaming PC instead of a more basic version.

She’s right but I don’t think it’s genuine lol

if anything has changed the way I look at celebrities (including my favorites) it’s the passing of Dolly Parton. It opened my eyes to how someone with money can still be a great person and morally aware. I’ll believe statements like this when they empty their pockets like she did and give back to the communities and the people that support them. I can count on one hand the “good” celebrities and that should be something we pay really close attention to when we decide who we are giving are streams and attention to.

Remember during TMB Gaga used to say “I hate money!” Not saying it’s the same thing because it was internationally more of a performance than a formal position on the topic in an interview, but same kind of vibes

I stan Slayyyter, too. She made imo the best new album so far this year. She delivered the energy that Madonna lacked on hers.

But I am old enough not to unconditionally cheer on a star and approve of everything s/he says. On pop star forums everything is black or white, polarized.

It is possible to musically like artists even if one disagrees with some, a few or all of their statements, and it is possible to detest an artist's music but appreciate what they say beyond music. It's not a given on Gagadaily, where everything has to fit together, and whatever doesn't fit is mentally made to fit =)

Fans too often force themselves to listen to new music if it comes from their favorite artist, even if they don't like it. Famously phrased as "the album grew on me:toofunny: which basically translates to "I didn't like the album on the first or the second listen. Actually, I still don't after the 25th but I have to give in to peer pressure and like it." And then buy singles they don't like, just to help the artist achieve a high chart position, which is actually completely counterproductive, because it only increases the chance of hearing a song you don't like live at the next concert, since successful songs are more likely to be played. This is so teenage insecure.

No, not with Ayesha.

By the way, I'm only mad today at Slayyyter, next week I'll have forgiven her.

I agree that mindlessly buying luxury items purely because they're luxury and are highly sought after even if you don't actually like them is a problem. But if you genuinely want this stuff and can afford it, it's fine. And I think she's exaggerating the secondhand comment a lot. What's cool about owning a used item that's been worn down and looks bad? It's probably going to completely fall apart after you've bought it before too long. It looks as if you could afford it once but can't anymore but are desperately holding onto it or are just too cheap to buy a replacement. Buying secondhand is fair enough but buy secondhand that's been well-preserved. If you bought a tatty item, they ripped you off. Brand new looks and feels amazing. Not to say you should do this all the time but replace as and when you need to. Damaged items are only aesthetic for magazine shoots, not in day to day life. In photoshoots, it looks edgy. In real life, it just looks sad.

She didn't say buy secondhand.

She was making a point that she'd rather wear something into the ground than have a new item every time she steps out of the house.

This is disingenuous.

A heavily satirical song from an album that didn't chart on any of the mainstream charts and which currently has 8k daily streams/8 mil total streams after 3 years is not proof that someone isn't credible when talking about consumerism. Especially when she's explicitly said that the song is a dramatisation inspired by De Palma and is supposed to show Hollywood's dirtiness.

Like one of the lines is literally "oh thank god I sold my soul". And it comes immediately after she calls herself a ****.

GGD never beating the media illiteracy allegations.

You're typing a whole lot of BS for me to read it all, and you're seriously approaching this in bad faith. You can't acknowledge the satire and continue to dog on her for using absurd amounts of labels to make her point. Every bit I've read of this is a reach and feels incredibly disingenuous. Make up your mind and figure out what you're saying based on the facts at hand. You're pulling a lot from nothing.

Only that empiric evidence contradicts you:

"SLayyyter used to buy into the idea of luxury as a symbol of status and style. Just a few years ago, she believed it enough to run up a credit-card charge for a designer purse straight from the retailer, even though she knew she couldn’t afford it. “It fell apart within, like, a month,” Slayyyter says, lounging on a couch in New York."

The fact her video is supposed to be satire, doesn't neglect that she was living luxury for an entire era at least and hunting luxury. How can someone be a Slayyyter stan and not see what she was doing for an entire era?

And I'm not approaching it in bad faith. I said I don't believe her. I didn't say it makes her a bad artist.

https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/slayyyter-worst-girl-in-america-crank-interview-1235569057/

She bought herself designer bags. She was following, living luxury. Now she says nice words that are socially desired.

The Rolling Stones article also says that Slayyyter "did not make much money" . I suppose the REAL reason why Slayyyter condemns Birkin bags is because she fails to afford one.  Remember she says super expensive luxury. She can afford expensive luxury, but not super expensive luxury. So since she can't have one, she says critical things about them after she failed to become rich enough. And she tried to become rich enough to afford them. But secretly she is just jealous. I'm very sure if she had made more money, we'd be seeing her with a designer bag again. She wanted to be part of the Birkin bag clan but since she is excluded, she says these things to make herself in a more positive light. Cheap cheap talk.

"The money she poured into touring wasn’t coming back, and frankly, she wasn’t having fun."

The real more honest topic title of this topic should therefore rather be:

"Slayyyter became jealous of super expensive luxury bags after she failed to afford them"

In this interview Slayyyter is like one of those girls who always wanted to be admitted at Harvard, but fails and afterwards says "I don't like Harvard because it is a pretentious institution"

Or those who apply for a Microsoft job and after they were rejected say "Microsoft is an unethical company"

that's her now just with super lxuury

I mean.

Running up debt to fake a lifestyle and then turning around and openly saying its no way to live is pretty consistent if you engage honestly with the subject.

You sound like every right wing influencer whenever a left leaning person critiques wealth while also being able to live comfortably.
