Matthew McConaughey Shares Story How Janet Jackson Song Got Him Quitting Weed

The extraordinary incident happened when McConaughey was younger and preparing to attend his birthday celebration. According to his account, a friend gave him a joint before he went to the party. But the marijuana was far stronger than he expected.

McConaughey has previously described how weed had changed over time, saying what had once been a casual experience could become mentally overwhelming. In his more recent account, he attributed the intensity to the increasingly potent marijuana he encountered.

Rather than heading straight inside, he remained in his car after taking a hit.

Then Jackson's That's The Way Love Goes came on.

What followed was an unusually intense musical fixation.

McConaughey listened to the track 24 times in a row, becoming so absorbed that attending his own birthday celebration apparently became secondary.

By the time he eventually got out of the car and went inside, his friends had already gone.

The actor's account makes clear just how much the experience affected him. The problem, he suggested, was not the Janet Jackson song itself; it was the effect the marijuana had on him.

The incident became a stark realisation that the drug was no longer giving him the relaxed experience he remembered. Instead, it had left him stuck in a loop, alone in his car, repeatedly playing the same song while his birthday party passed him by.

Despite the extraordinary circumstances surrounding the song, McConaughey has made it clear that he does not blame Jackson's music for his decision. Quite the opposite.

Reflecting on That's The Way Love Goes, he called it a 'cool, groovy little tune' before connecting it directly to the end of his marijuana use.

This is very, VERY real

It can go so wrong or so right

I was high out of my mind the first time I listened to Eternal Sunshine (the song) by Ariana... the second half of it was simultaneously the most beautiful, sad & EXISTENTIALLY, PHYSICALLY TERRIFYING thing I had ever experienced lmaooo

weed can be so scary you just have to be mindful about how much you intake. i used to do it all the time with my friend group & it was so relaxing until one night i was given a really strong joint; it had me in an existential panic attack for a whole day, it was not a cute feeling.

I don't do weed anymore, but like 4 years ago I got so stoned watching the 1999 VMAs on youtube that it felt like it was live

omg that feeling really sucks, and when you can't make it stop :(

I had to give it up when a fat hybrid rip interacted with my SSRI I has just gotten on, and it gave me a serotonin syndrome seizure all alone at home. t'wasn't fun!

I had a similar experience.
It was the Chromatica release night. The moment 911 began playing I was completely filled with dread, panic and anxiety.
The feeling lasted for around 3 months every time I heard it.

Of course I’ve grown to love the song now. But damn it was weird.

I love how the story and even the article make it very clear that the song is unrelated to his decision, yet the title is q clickbait :icant:

Just gotta be careful about that stuff. I lost a friend because his stuff was laced with fentanyl. I'm not here to be a debby downer, party pooper. I just want people to be careful with their recreational use....

I'm not getting any sleep tonight because I woke up to a beautiful life. I'm awake.
