Lone Ranger, Beyoncé whose country-inspired album Cowboy Carter won both Best Country Album and Album of the Year at the Grammys—has been exposed after a years-old video resurfaced showing her admitting that she had never listened to country music, despite being born and raised in Texas and later claiming that the genre originated with Black people.

Thoughts?

Then the signal split in two the sound created stars like me and you✨️

I don’t think it’s relevant since country made itself a very unsafe space for both Black and LGBTQIA+ people for over a decade, and she’s correct about Black contributions to country music. I’m grateful to Gaga, Beyonce, Orville, and several others for making country more accepting and accessible for people like me over the last ten years, and I’m glad the CMAs have feelings about it. People can seethe all day. Frankly, I’ll still be bopping to Cowboy Carter, folks can keep Blake Shelton and his cohorts lol.

Queer country artists deserve better than this statement

Not only is it an old clip, but it also misses the point of the statement “ALWAYS BEEN COUNTRY” as it relates to CC: that “country” as a genre is a construct, given how the album both plays with its roots, it’s current format, and it’s potential future. Not to mention the political exercise of reappropriating country as a black woman as a way of reclaiming a different form of patriotism from the white nationalist far right.

Not even a Beyoncé superfan and that has always been fairly obvious to me lol

Yeah, there’s so much country music that exists outside of the mainstream far right iteration of country that’s great. Even a straight artist like Sturgill Simpson is so obviously not MAGA, is politically outspoken, and is incredibly talented

I don't like the way this is phrased 'cause regardless of her personal experience with the genre, the fact that it has its roots in black American culture is absolutely fact :partysick:

Whimsical bitch

Yeah I don't think the "always been country" statement isn't about her as much as a cultural statement. I assume she doesn't listen to much ballroom house music either but she pays homage to the heritage of her culture I guess. Either way both albums slap imo so it's irrelevant.
