Helxig 45,573
Wtf why? This makes NO sense. The videos now autoplay on the homepage and I see it registers them in my watch history. I did not WATCH that video. Clicking on and off a video is not WATCHING it. Why would that ever count as a view? I'd suspect some kind of algorithmic or numbers manipulation at play, but wouldn't' that mean they would be paying YouTubers more money for more 'views'? Which they definitely would not want to do, being the greedy company they are.. Watch YouTubers pays get reduced very soon to 'compensate' I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin. Kayioshka 3,489
It’s a bad and good news. We are now able to make Applause reach the billion and surpass Roar because it’s Applause the one who won the war and is still on replay on TikTok. Probably under substances... An alchemist is born ! NewEnglandWitch 187
I’m a bit concerned about this as Youtube definitely attempts to push right leaning content already (they use rage bait algorithms for sure). This could exacerbate problems on the platform, particularly in short form. Highly encourage everyone to turn off watch history so it only shows content from your subscribed channels. It may actually hurt you in the long term depending on how that shapes algorithms.
StrawberryBlond 15,655
This is equal parts good and bad. Good in the sense that it'll help with an uptick in views, especially for newer creators who are struggling to get views for the algorithm. And it'll be great for Gaga, naturally, especially when her videos are new. Many creators aren't getting the views they used to get so this could certainly help. But it's bad in the sense that this will result in many spam views especially from manic fans who obsessively stream their faves all day to the point where it does affect the charts out of sheer manipulation. And it might mean that this isn't an accurate depiction of how popular a video actually is. Btw, I don't know why so many people say that YouTube isn't popular anymore. Everyone uses it. Music videos are its biggest revenue and still get lots of views and not just kpop and Latin acts either (look at DWAS!). Videos struggle when they're super long or you don't have a huge fanbase but it's always been like that. I can't imagine a world where YouTube doesn't exist because it's useful for so many things. I hope it stays around forever and am ultimately supportive of anything that improves its traffic. Go back further to the very early days and im pretty sure a click = a view automatically That's what I thought too. Back then, there was an "average viewer duration" stat as well so you could see how far into the video the average person watches. Was very handy to see if acting at the start of a long music video, unnecessarily long intros, life updates before a video begins, etc. maybe make people switch off. I remember I was checking the longform GUY video back then to see how much people were willing to watch and it was around 4 minutes or so. So it was very smart of them to release a broadcast edit. But then that option vanished around the time this 30 second rule must have been introduced. It meant you couldn't just hit refresh all day. But I thought it was reverted back after a while. I don't know these days. I just pause a video before it begins just to be sure. Now I do know. I'm wondering if this is why whenever you refresh that the video has to have the play button manually pushed in order to begin and if you've had the sound off, it's back on? This has only happened in the last few days. Is it to prepare us for it in a week?

It has largely replaced my normal tv whatching But it has declined a bit from its peak and has more competition from other apps and social media when it comes to videos and shorts I think thats the big thing 10-15 years ago youtube had a virtual monopoly on videos. Even facebook video links were often embeded to youtube Now instagram and tik tok shorts take a significant portion of young peoples times and youtube now competes with that. So its very popular still absolutely, but it has declined from its peak
