Gaga and Whitney as top two yes (with honourable mention to Billy Joel's first go at it), but I have Gaga at number 1.

I prefer what she does with the low notes, and in general I prefer that piercing quality in Gaga's voice to Whitney's beautiful smoothness, although I do wish Gaga hadn't done that free eeee thing because she can't REALLY get up there (I think).

Bear in mind also that Whitney went first and people (rightly) fell in love with her version, but I think with that there then comes a reluctance to admit that anyone could do it better. You see the phrase 'set the standard', and yes, Whitney did do that, but you also see the phrase 'nobody can match', and that obviously isn't true. It isn't true to say it of Whitney and it wouldn't be true to say it of Gaga either.

That concludes the case for the Gagacution m'lud.

She absolutely can. FWIW, the note isn’t even that high, she just held onto slightly too much laryngeal tension from the more classical chest sound she was doing in the phrase leading up to the flip into head voice, so when she flipped, her throat and mask weren’t as open/resonant as they needed to be for her to hit the note more cleanly. IMO, the clash in style was always what bothered me with that opt up and, from a technical POV, that’s also why she didn’t stick the landing: switching from a classical mock-belt to a pop R&B head flip isn’t easy lol

I think it's a fair ranking.

She did excellent but Whitney's possibly the best voice we got if we discuss popular music only and omit opera or gospel singers.

Yes she lipped this one unlike Gaga but if she didn't she would probably still give the top rendition. Here's a live performance of the Anthem she did later.

Yes. This is what I meant to say, but I was just a bit stuck for time.😊

I will not accept the Whitney hate

Even without lip syncing she could do a better rendition than Gaga indeed.

No popstar ever topped Whitney's vocals.
