I would like to also point out that the only deciding factor between Gaga and Whitney’s version is simply the political state of the US at the time of Whitney’s rendition. Not to mention the fact Gaga’s was actually live.

But I’ll take second (which is really first tbh)

And many more. She made up for the commercial success "break" in the best way possible and this was the moment that solidified my faith in Gaga and made me her supporter no matter what

As a child, Stefani Germanotta—the girl who grew up to become Lady Gaga—says she used to stand on top of her parents' staircase and belt Whitney Houston's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner". Find out why Gaga says Whitney was her greatest musical influence for 10 years …

“ … actually my greatest influence in this house for at 10 years was Whitney really, yes; and I used to stand at the top of that staircase and sing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner‘ every single day after school and my father and I would play it over and over … and I would study her version of ‘The Star-Spangled Banner‘ … and I used to stand up there, and I would study her … and, it's so interesting that you brought that up, Mom … It's like I don't forget about it because—but I thanked her at the Grammys when I won that award because she for me is the greatest of all time … really: the greatest of all time”
