Some online retailers are deciding not to sell GTA 6 on their websites in protest against the decision to sell the game as a digital download code in a box, instead of shipping the open worlder on a disc.

So far, two USA and Canadian retailers, Video Games Plus and Loot Box Gaming, have published statements on social media covering their decisions to not stock the next Rockstar game.

The former said that, having been in business for almost 40 years, one of its policies has always been to refuse carrying physical games that only contain a download code in the box.

"Based on the information currently available, the physical release of Grand Theft Auto VI for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X is expected to be a code-in-box product. As a result, VGP will not be offering it for sale under our current company policy."

It wishes Rockstar the best with the game's release on 19th November 2026, but confirms it will only stock a version of the game that's on a physical disc. "Should Rockstar one day release a physical edition containing a disc in the box, we would be pleased to carry and support that version for our customers

Then, over on the Loot Box Gaming profile, it confirmed it also won't be supporting GTA 6 over the decision to ship the physical version as a code in a box.

"When we started LBG, it was out of a love for our favorite form of media, gaming, as-well as the preservation of said media. If a product can’t honor the people who pay their hard earned money to purchase it, then we have no business trying to sell it to our customers whom we value above anything else."

Lucas

Why put a digital code in a box though? That makes no sense to me from a commercial point of view, why pay for plastic, manufacturing, shipping etc... for something they could sell online

Maybe these retailers and consumers should have stood the **** up like 15 years ago when companies started shipping games which weren't playable without a Day 1 patch or were solo only games which required an internet connection to play.

Bit like complaining now when we've just reached the natural conclusion of the **** they were fine with until now.

REALITY

It's still gonna make a sh*t ton of money because the hype for the game is astronomically high, but between this and the $80-$100 price point, it IS incredibly anti-consumer.

Yeah I agree but let’s not act like download codes in a physical box is new, Terraria did it I think and I know it wasn’t the only one. To hell with every publisher who does it, but it’s not like rockstar is the first to do it
