onTheBrink 842
I think it's disappointing, and I think she should have said something. They should all have said something. However, there's a tendency amongst us gays, girls theys and thems to outsource the gay priding to other people. It's never us doing the advocacy, or being the loud voice, or peeling back the layers of the societal onion. Myself included. I've really savoured pride this year and have read widely. Some reading recommendations: - Out of the Shadows - the psychology of gay men's lives, walt odets - Gay Spirit - Myth and Meaning - Mark Thompson - The Velvet Rage - alan downs - Gay Body - Mark Thompson - Healing the shame that binds you - John Bradshaw (Limited to the gay male experience cause I'm a cis guy)....however, especially as I get older the more I realize that homophobia is so much more subtle than I ever notice in the moment. The effects of being a minority in this society are so much more subtle and pernicious. So this pride I've made a commitment to always be developing my awareness, because I can't feel pride for myself in an environment that shames me in invisible ways. And ultimately as someone who is 'in the life' that's kinda my responsibility, and it's everybody's individual responsibility. We cannot rely on politicians and hollywood celebrities at all times. The pride we feel for ourselves should always be enough. Edited Wednesday at 12:47 AM by onTheBrink

Great references but again, Gaga is a bisexual woman. She is not outside of this. I think this is something we really need to address within this fanbase altogether - not directed at yourself especially, this is not an attack - and this is a really thoughtful post and includes some reading I need to take a look at myself. You are entirely right in what you say otherwise by the way, I absolutely do not want to diminish that. We all experience things differently. And we can all do better - I definitely do! But I also think it’s important to make sure we include bisexuals in this, including bisexual women who are dating men, that often get excluded. I’ll check out the readings you’ve recommended and maybe add some on here that pertain to lesbian and queer women, ultimately I think as a community we just want to help each other and understand. Please do! Honestly the more we do as a community to point eachother in the direction of awareness and understanding, the better. Living in this world as a minority like this, especially when you're not surrounded by a gay community (maybe people are rural or are closeted) is baffling so knowledge is truly power

What's really disappointing is how many people don't think it's necessary. Ok I’m so done acting like it’s not necessary. IT IS. SPECIALLY THIS YEAR. It wouldn’t even take her 2 minutes to do it. That’s not what I meant!! Obviously she made herself, but who made her famous and rich? Us (and the radio!) We bought her music, bought merch, attended concerts, etc. Obviously she made herself the woman who she is today. But her status wouldn’t be the same without us. Please take my words lightly. Like...that's the transaction The activism was always something she isn't obligated to do but did anyway. I’ve been blessed to have friends from p much every part of the LGBTQ+ community and also have a partial degree in queer studies which has been so illuminating. My dissertation supervisor is a lesbian who was involved in ACT UP in NYC in the 80s and it was so life changing to hear. Basically, let’s support each other, let’s listen to each other and let’s care about each other.
