gagzus 21,870
I think people lack a lot of nuance as to how big a public safety issue activism has become for someone in Gaga’s position for both sides of the spectrum, Gaga is a public figure and a target and all those associated with her become targets and grouped together. Her parents, her friends, her team even her housekeeper even if they don’t share her views get tarred with them. And I think she’s highly aware of that. I mean as much as we hated him, look at Charlie Kirk he’s not half as famous and got assassinated in front of a large group of people — imagine Gaga being on a podium at a massive Palestine or Trans protest? No thanks. In a world where the biggest social media platforms are run by right wing men and companies, that constantly push out engagement bait and misinformation for the sake of money and algorithms. Plus how susceptible people are to misinformation in the age of AI and engagement bait — a post on social media is also irrelevant. We’ve all seen the comments on posts across all social media that are on pro-LGBTQ+ media. Even things like Pink News that are staunchly pro-LGBTQ+ mesia networks; the first set of comments is always some weird comments filled with misogyny, racism, transphobia, ableism. Because that’s how engagement bait works. Plus people forget, after the legal document leak we KNOW she’s been active behind the scenes for YEARS and not publicly in activism of all kinds. She was considered the biggest push in the repeal of DADT, her foundation redistributed donations of over $6m worldwide of donations and investment money to mental health charities, LGBTQ+ charities and more in the early 2020s, she was the championing public face behind a lot of the WHO stuff during Covid, she’s met with religious leaders over the years, she’s shouted out trans and gay people CONSISTENTLY and as recently as 2025 across award show platforms televised and streamed to millions. — that’s all still activism, people forget Gaga is a pacifist not an anarchist. Whatever her reasons, it comes off as apathy and being out of touch. We all know she's a nice person with a great deal of empathy which really makes the constant silence even more confusing. Tbf, over the years I've noticed how apathetic I've become. I'm trying to bring the whimsy back, in an effort to reclaim any sort of connection to between the inward-outwards. The last decade, especially the latter half, gradually, has been getting more and more sucky. I do agree she's gotten more apathetic over the years, but I don't really blame her. It could very well be a defense mechanism/trauma response. And honestly just because she has more resources, doesn't exclude her from this collective nihilistic consensus. more so, trigger executive dysfunction with all the responsibility that comes with having such a big platform and the importance of using one's voice.

I’m not arguing against visibility, but making the stakes of posting “Happy Pride” on IG about death and discrimination feels incredibly disproportionate. It is though? Because trans people are regularly being killed due to a lot of the hateful rhetoric taking place online and in person. Harrassment is a continuous issue. Someone speaking out about it, even just online, is incredibly important. he/him/his

Again, nowhere did I argue against speaking out, but acting like Lady Gaga posting something for pride will literally save people’s lives from being taken by a transphobe is purely abstract and is totally disproportionate. I still maintain putting pressure where it counts (on political actors to protect LGBTQ+ people) is the clearest strategic route. Decodekid 30,371
And for my thesis statement, I could argue that waking up and just existing as Lady Gaga it’s political enough to make some sort of difference each and every day on its own already, therefore it’s literally pride all year long for someone like Lady Gaga thermonuclear gas blaster 1 1

Right but why should we expect her to solve the world's issues? As if she is more than any one of us. It's mental illness to expect this from her honestly. Some people barely manage to get out of bed but our 'icons' should lift the world above their head as if they're Atlas. And even then she has shown more than most how much she cares, her caring so much is probably what got her struggling with mental illness in the first place. If any celeb deserves to be cut some slack it's Gaga.

Pigatha 1,202
I see some are still living in a fantasy. Social media activism by celebs does absolutely f*cking nothing, 2016-2020 celebs were super vocal about what was going on, it did nothing. Celebs might have a huge platform but when it comes to politics it's either ignored or draws massive amounts of hate their way. However there are things that these social media corporations could do to crack down on red pill masculinity, racism, transphobia, fake news, misinformation and extremist political views (both right and left) but they will not do it because it would hurt their wallets and they are beholden to the administration.
mlmc1995 66
I’m not saying she shouldn’t say something and that it wouldn’t be nice, but she is bisexual so it’s her month as well. Maybe cishets should have more responsibility? Can’t directly compare myself as I’m not famous but I’m a non binary dyke and I keep forgetting it’s pride month. Admittedly the pride celebration in my city is in August so June doesn’t mean much necessarily but all the same. But maybe could we start holding people outside of the community to account Edited Wednesday at 12:07 AM by mlmc1995
