Turkiye Blocks LGBTQ+ Social Media Accounts Ahead Of Istanbul Pride Week

Turkey has blocked access to 57 X accounts belonging to women’s and LGBTI+ rights organizations and activists, citing national security and public order concerns, days before the start of Istanbul Pride Week, according to the Freedom of Expression Association (İFÖD).

The accounts were blocked under Article 8/A of Law No. 5651 and made invisible in Turkey by X. Those affected include Mor Çatı Women’s Shelter, Lambdaistanbul and Young LGBTI+, Women for Women’s Human Rights (WWHR), Struggle against Sexual Violence as well as LGBTI+ working groups within the Human Rights Association (İHD) and the Turkish Journalists Union (TGS).

The restriction came ahead of the 34th İstanbul Pride Week, scheduled for June 22-28, when rights groups typically use social media to share event information and encourage participation.

In notifications to account holders, X said the accounts were restricted in Turkey “in order to comply with our obligations arising from local laws.”

The move drew criticism from a coalition of 21 human rights organizations, including Amnesty International’s Turkey branch, the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (TİHV) and the Lawyers for Freedom Association (ÖHD).

In a joint statement, the groups said the access restrictions, imposed as organizations were preparing for Pride Week activities, constituted a “severe and disproportionate interference” with freedom of expression.

The organizations warned that blocking accounts used for women’s rights, LGBTI+ and human rights groups narrowed civic space and prevented the public from receiving information about lawful activities.

The Human Rights Association also condemned the decision as a clear attack on freedom of expression and freedom of association, saying it legitimized discrimination against women and LGBTI+ individuals through state action and calling on international human rights mechanisms to take action.

For anyone who knows a little bit about football... When a team has no striker it's harder to score. And yet our team managed to go to the quarter final of the Euro 2024. Because our Italian coach had good strategies with his . Players like Arda, Can, Hakan and Kenan scored a lot despite not being strikers but midfielders or right wings.

In fact, we have several talents and okayish players. Our match are thrillings because they rely on tactics and chaos. We are the 22th (a lucky number) best team on Fifa's top NT. It’s not the best team but it’s an interesting team. 

Sadly we played against people who plays Soccer, apparently it’s very inspired by Haramball (a sport born in the British Premier League). There are 11 people in the defense. 

When you have no pure striker... You cannot score correctly against a wall. The occasions are rarer.

The best exemple of a team with great talents but still incomplete is Italy’s team aswell. They have Calafiori, Retegui, Donnaruma, Esposito, Chiesa, Mané, etc... Some of the best players or wonderkids born in Serie A. But they do not have a striker and their defense is still a bit fragile.

Football is about live performances and vibes not just cold stats.

I wasn’t mentionning you for the first part. I was wishing you good luck for the Erdo's disgusting politics... 

No I think that technically they are interesting despite having defaults. They gave us entertaining matchs, better results, and an identity as a team lately.

I don’t think any team sucks as long there are supporters or passion. I speak for local clubs or small nation teams. I never appreciated the idea of saying "this one team is hell". Even the ones who play Haramball (Paraguay and Australia ) have a lot of supporters. France had for many years a team of mid players but the passion was here. Platini or Papin are exceptions, 80s French Football was a vibe despite being mid technically speaking.

And now here we are with one of the most solid team ever (I'm watching them playing atm 🇫🇷).

The points and results from the regional qualification matches do not matter once the World Cup begins. I’m aware of the weakness of the team but Türkiye was eliminated simply because they are already the confirmed 4th place based on them losing to both teams who are currently sharing the 2nd and 3rd position.
