I never know what the line is with/how people react to this sort of stuff. Because Sam Smith does it (who's actually queer and non-binary), and people dog them for it. Then Harry Styles does it, who is as far as know, a cisgender straight man, and then he gets dogged for it. But Benson does it, and it's like "Well, he's an ally!" and "I'd rather have him queerbait than have him actively hate us."

Honestly, I'm at a point where if we can't even get QUEER people to comfortably express themselves in public spaces, the straights can f*ck off. I'm frankly tired of seeing cisgender straight people co-opting queerness and using it to look "cool" and "trendy."

I think Benson Boone looks like a rat that got hit with a witch's spell and turned human. 

A straight dude wearing a dress during a time that a man wearing a dress can get that man assaulted or worse in America is not going to kill our community or our identity. 

There is a significant difference between a brand pinkwashing during pride month while actively funding our abusers and oppressors vs a guy in a dress making a tiktok. 

Its so funny that you're trying to talk about protecting our community and identity while taking the first possible moment to reduce our community down to the stereotype of being sex obsessed and unable to think critically.

The thing is. 

We can't have it one way or the other. 

If we as a community attack people for dressing and behaving this way, we're contributing to the othering of the this kind of public appearance that makes it harder for queer people.

There is a reason why bigots & the right wing media latched onto discussions of queerbaiting over the last decade and used it to further their agenda of reestablishing social restrictions on this kind of self-expression. 

Personally, I'll always believe that queer-baiting discourse was a trojan horse tactic to get the community to endorse its own oppression.

Sam Smith is an interesting case because there's a few issues going on there. 

1. They are fat & not conventionally attractive. Something that the embrace of queerness made "worse" in the eyes of mainstream society. 
2. Benson/Harry type displays generally do it in a way that either complies with conventional definitions of sexuality despite gender-bending OR go to the extreme and almost make it devoid of sexuality. So in both cases it wouldn't normally upset mainstream society (less so the case these days as the "debate" around this topic is incredibly hostile and the slightest deviation from it's demands leads to aggressive responses). 
3. Sam Smith pissed off more than just the heteros. They also pissed off the emerging "LGB not the T" tossers so the backlash was made to appear bigger because the media had gay people to use against Sam. But also - Sam Smith pissed off the really annoying sect of post-tumblr queers who want to destroy sexuality because they're christian purists in starbucks uniforms and Sam pissed them off because Sam didn't become a tenderqueer. They actively embraced everything taboo and deliberately courted outrage through things like featuring watersports references in music videos and making songs about DL t-chasers.
