Not really sure what warranted this level of escalation over a fairly tame comment (directed at someone who is legally an Irish citizen with close ties to relatives in the country), tbh. I am fully aware of the role of the British government in the troubles. I also lived in the city with the largest irish diaspora in the UK. I studied at the UK's only Irish Studies department outside of Northern Ireland. And I support Irish reunification and the irish republican movement. I wasn't escalating ****. I was pointing out a different perspective based on my experiences and my friendships with irish friends, family and colleagues. You're the one escalating **** yet again with me babe. Twice in the space of a week you've got aggressive with me and I ain't having it. Thought we were as close to friends as people get on this hellsite. But clearly not. You don’t see how it’s escalatory to say “Americans claiming connection to their Irish heritage broadly is meaningfully correlated to *some* Irish Americans ignorantly causing material harm in Northern Ireland?” I don’t know if you recognize this, but when you start levying weighty moral judgments against people (ie Irish Americans identifying with their cultural heritage somehow fuels sectarian violence in Ireland), you’re going to get responses that mirror that energy back to you lol. You put Irish Americans in a position where, by proxy of their identification with their heritage, they have to atone for material harms they aren’t collectively responsible for, yet got awfully offended when that same standard was applied to the British. But I wasn't offended? I literally said I know what my government did and that I oppose it. You just clearly dislike speaking to neurodivergent people and can't understand that some people like me don't behave the way you expect. Like this idea I'm upset you mentioned the fact the british troops were murderers? Nah babe. I've been supporting that stance for my entire adult life. You just stated something I recognise and oppose british gov actions to avoid like the revent legacy bill that tied to absolve them of their crimes. I'm upset because someone I thought was vaguely a friend has treated me like a c*nt repeatedly this week. To the point I almost quit the site once. Not because you pointed out the Brits are ****. Again, why does every argument escalate into uncharitable (and often baseless) character judgements? You’re assuming all neurodivergent people behave the same way, you’re assuming that I’m neurotypical, and you’re making my disagreement with you a character flaw instead of even recognizing that there could be a valid reason why I responded or interpreted your comment the way I did. When I say “offended,” I’m not characterizing you as being upset, I’m basically saying “you took issue with it,” which I think is fair to say. And again, I’m not claiming you endorse the actions the Brits took against the Irish, I was using that as a reductio ad absurdum to point out what I thought was the fallacy in your response to my comment about the way Irish Americans relate to their ancestry, as I felt that you used my comment as a way of trying to hold them collectively responsible for wrongs done by *some* Irish Americans. Americans do anything to say “hey I’m not just white and I’m oppressed too” if we’re being honest. Saying there’s more Irish people in the US than there are in Ireland is a preposterous claim and a very American centric one. Americans also reduce being Irish to St Patrick’s Day related things and Catholicism and that’s it pretty much it. And there's inconsistencies about where we draw the line. I think referring to yourself as "Irish" if your parents are Irish makes sense, because you're being raised by an Irish person in what can be described by default as an Irish way. But people like Gaga for example referring to herself as Italian, when both parents were raised in America, as much as I love her, is pretentious. You are from America girl. Just say that. Yeah my main thing was that you’re Irish (as a half Irish person) if your immediate family are Irish, then you’re Irish. But the majority of people I’ve seen will be like “oh I’m Irish” from America have no remnants of the culture beyond stereotypes and basic knowledge of our heritage and history and their great or great great grandparents were Irish immigrants. I also think the same with Gaga, she’s says she Italian but she isn’t because her great grandparents are Italian but her connection to being Italian only lives in her cooking habits and her family’s Catholicism. Which does not an Italian make. Same for the Irish in my eyes. Saying you have ancestry is fine, but there’s a lot of people who say “I’m Irish” or “I’m Italian” despite the fact they’ve no knowledge or hqve never been to their motherland. I still just think it’s such an Americanism to try and distinguish yourself away from being like “oh I’m white” that’s what it boils down to. Because Irish and Italian’s are still white people. 1

MOT 3,561 Posted yesterday at 03:10 PM Share Posted yesterday at 03:10 PM It's different for different people I would guess. Take Gaga for example. If she wants to make a big deal of her Italian heritage (or not) that's fine, it's a personal thing.
