Loved obsession, but Backrooms didn't do too much for me. Regardless, I'm happy to see non-tentpole regurgitated IP doing great at the box office.

May this start a trend of more original films, especially from young talent.

So happy A24 is finally making the big bucks after years of distributing original films.

It is such a good week to see two great horror movies dominating and the corporate Disney sequel stuff not being able to top it.

Can’t say about Obsession but Backrooms is technically not an original film because it’s based on existing media. If they came up with the concept of Backrooms without the Creepypasta and YouTube videos then it would be classified as an original.

But original content is very sparse nowadays because companies worry about sales and will often put less money into stuff that doesn’t have a pre-existing property or history to play off of.

I can’t fathom that Toni Collette never won Best Actress when Hereditary was out.

I’m SAYING! She was absolutely incredible in Hereditary

We have forgotten our public MANNERS

Ah this makes me so happy. The 2020s have been such a great decade for horror films, glad to see people are going to support these brand new ideas (Backrooms based on a short but still) which I'm sure are going to get sequels soon.

Now can we finally take horror seriously in Hollywood?

I doubt that. It's just hat majority of movie goers now are gen Z who enjoys this genre, and that shows on box office. Meanwhile Hollywood are still run by boomers with their certain ideas, that might not be relevant today anymore.

I guess. But I like that Kane made YouTube content and now made it into a film, so I’m going to count it as an original in my household!

I think it’s about time Horror as horror only gets its flowers at the Oscars like I can’t fathom that Toni Collette never won Best Actress when Hereditary was out.

Yes Sinners just won BUT that was more of a drama with horror.

The thing is, horror is distasteful and uncomfortable for a lot of people. It is never going to have that level of appeal, certainly not in our lifetime.

I think they should judge it on how the authentic emotion is presented, if it unnerves you and the actors can act genuinely terrified and things without generic jump scares and make you invested in the twists and turns (ala Hereditary or Midsommar) then it should be eligible.

They also don’t have genre specific awards for Horror or Fantasy but will fully have a category for Animation and Thrillers often get put in drama categories. Thrillers are closer to Horrors than people think too.

oh I’m particularly happy the original creator of the YouTube videos made the movie. But even then his videos weren’t original they were based on a Creepypasta they’re just the most famous interpretation of the story.

But the concept of Backrooms is in the public domain anyway hence the McDonald’s ad, there’s also a custom Tomb Raider story made about them too that’s quite popular online.

I’m shocked nobody made a Backrooms movie or attempted to before really.
