I just find it very annoying  I don't like the production or the chorus. The verses are fine. And I mean, I'd still argue that yes, and? is more of a "melodically nothing" song than htimylm. I much prefer the melody of the latter.

But I'd rather think a song is fine/mediocre than actively dislike it

Exactly, as if Gaga hasn't collected a museum of unbridled hate and pure venomous essays and op-eds of assigned and rando reviewers basically refusing to review her work and writing down literally anything that didn't have to do with the work at hand, whether it was TFM, BTW or something created later than those (not just refuse to engage with her art, refuse to listen at all and seemingly proud of it). There was a whole movement of reviewers, it seemed, who didn't want to be associated with listening to her art, an immensely refreshing and creative vision and the once-in-a-generation range, versatility and thus also the work of the woman who had basically single-handedly reset the dead pop landscape she started in. Why did all those supposed "main pop girls" back then start wearing weird outfits wholly unrelated to their continued bubblegum pop videos all of a sudden? Because they didn't understand it wasn't merely "weird" instead of "pretty and sexy" outfits that made/make LG a pop and genre-mixing revolutionary. The rock bros and the utterly confused who worked for music media that gave and still give her their laughable scores obviously didn't understand either. One rude-ish (more bored-sounding imo) review REALLY won't hurt Ariana Grande!  I really don't wish what Gaga got on anyone but the way she was treated was despicable.

Other outlets might praise this Ariana single to the heavens anyways, or the album itself if they don't review singles. Isn't she beloved because of her high voice? I heard that 'Ariana is a national treasure' over and over because of RoM.

I listened to Hate That I Made You Love Me and it's very, very milquetoast to me- the story re: not owning the obsession she is supposed to have inspired is indeed over after the first verse. And there's not much separating chorus from verse. And yeah, it's slightly more enunciated than I remember her being. But for me it's meh on all fronts (well, it's not like the better enunciation would've saved it ). And yes, vibes can work but didn't for me here either, I didn't get dreamy... Kate Bush, Maggie Reilly (I love her work best when paired with player of 6546 instruments Mike Oldfield) and The Police as well as several Eurythmics songs where Annie Lennox does dreamy/trance-like in her own way can all be dreamweavers in some of their catalogue - but most importantly, they know when to stop repeating the same lines/singing them the same way/let the music do its job etc. This is, for me, a big nothingburger. I listened to it five times, three with lyrics even to see if I hadn't missed any meaningful layers... 

Anyway, sticking to Gaga and sometimes my late 70's/80's faves for a reason.

But on a more optimistic note: if there are Ariana fans here that are dissatisfied with this first single: I wholeheartedly hope you enjoy the new album much more, truly!

If you like/love this song, I'm happy for you! I mean that. Everybody's got different taste in music and if this does it for you, don't let one review take the fun of the music away.
