If a song is a form of storytelling, the story has to go somewhere, I’m sorry, sister. I love stuff that’s vibes, but even that needs some kind of dynamic range for texture or intrigue (which this song, unfortunately lacks)

You're supposed to be the cerebral lyrics analyst, I'm supposed to be the lyric-aphasic, dancing airhead!

 

She may not be flexing her vocals as much as usual this time around, but the lyrics do the heavy lifting & story-telling in this track. Even though i don't think it's a requisite for a song, I would argue that this song does, in fact, "go somewhere." It's much more than vibes.

She's disowning someone else's feelings/judgments of her & refusing to take responsibility for inciting obsession/eventual contempt within another fully grown adult. Whether she's talking about Spongebob or, more generally, about toxic fans, is up to interpretation.

Meanwhile, the song itself is pleasant & dreamy to the ear

The "cause I bare...ly...tried" has stuck with me, both to hum & sing

Yeah, but all of the lyrical story is basically finished by the end of the first chorus, imo. And the musical story also ends even before that, given that the chorus basically plateaus melodically back into the same territory as the verses.

Though I think its fine as is, I also made a streamlined version in garageband that is just the three choruses stitched together, no verses or bridge
