Charli XCX Defends Herself For Putting Exclusive Songs On Vinyl For Marketing

Charli XCX has released a new song that's only available on Instagram and vinyl, in a very internet move from the brat artist.

Days after releasing her latest single "Rock Music," Charli XCX released another new track, a B-side called "I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day and Night." The artist posted the song on her secondary Instagram account b.sides, with a video shot in Kyoto, Japan, by The Moment director Aidan Zamiri.

"i went to kyoto for six weeks to shoot a film. while we were there, i made this video with aidan," she captioned the post, noting the track is only available on Instagram and the "Rock Music" 7" vinyl, "so rip the audio if you want it xx."

The very idea of ripping audio from an artist's page seems a) shocking and b) like some '00s Limewire Y2K energy to me, which, yeah, is extremely Charli XCX. It's also giving "secret single" from the age of CDs (those who know Hanson's Middle of Nowhere didn't end with "With You in Your Dreams" know what I'm talking about).

As well as a very internet way to connect the song with fans, it's also a clever marketing move by Atlantic Records encouraging physical sales, as "I Keep On Thinking Bout You Every Single Day and Night" is also only available on the "Rock Music" vinyl.

Charli XCX has shared a new song, Playboy Bunny.

The pop-punk-inspired track serves as the b-side to the Grammy and BRIT-winning artist's latest single, SS26, which she released last Thursday (May 21).

Like I Keep Thinking About You Every Single Day And Night, the b-side to her previous single Rock Music, Playboy Bunny is only available on limited edition 7" vinyl and via the pop singer's b-sides Instagram account, where the accompanying black and white video is streaming exclusively. Explaining her new retro-style release format in a post on social media, Charli explained:

"The B-sides are sort of like coupled with some of the songs that are coming out ahead of the album. The reason that they’re paired together, these two songs, are because, in ways, they’re totally opposite from each other, and that is find of the main point of them."

She added: "It’s sort of a mirror… there are specifically sonic things about it that are extremely opposite to ‘SS26,’ and I think that’s what made it a good B-side, a good pair.”

I mean, there's nothing to apologize for. Every artist should do that tbh, it would make the whole experience more special. But they choose to sacrifice the excitement in favor of easy access and chart numbers.

I think it’s funny and very “rock music”

There are plenty of obscure acts from back in the day whose music was only ever released on vinyl, and only exists on youtube or file sharing mediums like soulseek because someone cared enough to rip the audio from said records — yes the difference here is that said music being unavailable on streaming wasn’t a conscious choice, but still, in essence this is nothing new

Yes it’s a marketing ploy as well but it will only work on people who don’t know how to find ripped audio files anywhere other than spotify, apple music, etc. I guarantee you the tracks will be everywhere soon enough and she knows that.

Also, tracks exclusive to physical mediums aren’t anything new anyway.

My point is I think this is a cute way for her to have her fans engage with this music in a way that many people were forced to as we made the switch from analog to digital

Nothing she said in that quote explained why releasing them exclusively on vinyl and her side account is any different to releasing a streaming single with both songs on. At best, this is another of her irritating 'I'm so different' marketing tactics, at worst, it's a cynical way of driving up single sales and social media engagement.
