Yeah, insisting people strip the art and intellect out of language feels both anti-intellectual and more artificial than someone giving “AI vibes” because they used slightly more elevated rhetoric and metaphorical language lol

My gay ass would be clocked so hard by some people (not miss RenegAde).

I was flying out of LA one night and the city lights were illuminating the bottom of the clouds in this dull orange color and then we broke through the clouds and the city disappeared and it was just the full moon casting a pure silver light on the top of the clouds as we climbed.

That sight had me writing in my notes app for the next five hours about love and humanity :icant:

I stan miss XIV for the way this factual statement was written :diane:

It reads as poetic to me which I appreciate as someone who likes to write and leans heavily on imagery to translate emotions and thoughts into something a reader could imagine seeing.

It also adds a nice bit of...idk, weight, I guess, to combat the idea of AI and tech companies training their algorithms to mimic human language with proof that man can still speak with eloquence and intelligence.

Pope Leo XVI combatting the idea that humans only derive worth through labor/output:

“Among these ideologies, I consider particularly insidious the one that suggests that every person must earn or justify his or her own worth, to the point of attributing greater value to those who are more efficient or effective. From this perspective, persons end up being reduced to a means of achieving results, a resource to be used and exploited, and are no longer recognized as a proper end in themselves who should never be instrumentalized. The value of persons, however, does not depend on what they achieve or produce. There are rights that apply to everyone simply by virtue of being human, and no human power can legitimately deny or arbitrarily limit them.”

Are you talking about the Vatican or the global Catholic Church? The global Catholic Church is estimated to have hundreds of billions of dollars in non-liquid assets (churches, museums etc) and is also recognized as one of the largest non-governmental providers of education and healthcare, particularly in the global south and East Asia. Yeah, maybe they could sell off some of the property, but I don’t really think it’s particularly accurate to act as if they don’t actually do demonstrable good and are purely leeches.

Also, to the Miss Universe point: given how many far right governments in particular derive their so-called “moral mandates” from the Church, it actually removes cover from these bad faith (pun intended) actors to claim they’re acting as Christians when they are openly standing against the positions of the church, so I don’t think that’s politically insignificant.

Both, for example, The Vatican has one of the highest GDP per capita in the world, all thanks for leeching money from Italy and the taxes of people.. it shouldn't happen.

The global catholic church replace the crusades with expanding through culture, health and education and bringing christianity to many locations, especially in 3rd world countries.. it's their way to hold power in every state, city and neighborhood.

I mean, even trying to assign a per-capita GDP to Vatican City doesn’t really make a lot of sene, given that like 800 people live there and the revenue is predominantly from tourism. When you divide that tourist revenue by a tiny population, you’re essentially creating an artificially inflated GDP. Also the tax money from Italy that goes to the Vatican is, as I understand it, basically voluntary under the Lateran Treaty (citizens can choose to send a portion of their tax revenue to support the Vatican). Outside of any of that, the Vatican doesn’t have any real sovereign wealth or huge liquid assets. Also, ns, but comparing the Catholic Church providing education and healthcare as a form of soft power to the literal crusades is a massive stretch. Is it aimed at accruing good will and, hopefully, converts? Sure. Does that erase the actual good it does? Not substantially.

I mean this is a nice way to look at it however,  the reality it that this is a highly manufactured press release that was probably put through a rigorous optimization process to make it sound as flawless, predictable and safe as possible which is ironic because that is exactly how AI works

Only from the Italian “faith tax” they get around €1 billion every year (and you can choose between the vatican, any other religion or the state but if you are an atheist u must pay this tax anyway, the state choice goes mostly to the vatican anyway)

But apart of that they get  extra €6 billion in average every year from italy

also an exemption from taxes and bills

every single property they have around the world is enjoying exemptions of taxes and bills.

It’s a rich empire that has power and control in almost every single country.

There is precisely zero irony there lol. Manually writing and editing a treatise to make sure it’s as tight as possible isn’t comparable to spitting an idea into a machine that exploits pre-existing writing to generate text from essentially nothing. Also, ns, but it’s kind of telling that you think this text is somehow so impenetrably dense that one person couldn’t have written it and had maybe one or two editors, when I think it’s actually totally believable that one guy probably wrote the bulk of this lol

Can’t find a source on that. What is this referring to?

This is not what I'm saying at all :air:

Im a writer myself and I know when something feels like its written by a system and not a person and i don't care if the system is a team of editors or Chatgpt, personality i think its ironic to talk about how humans shouldn't be seen as "systems to be optimised" in a letter that reads like it was ran through and optimised by a  team of Vatican scholars.

How do you not recognize that there’s a substantial difference between the two and virtually no tension or irony there? Editorial work isn’t reflective of the type of dehumanizing system optimization he’s referring to. He’s referring to how AI encourages companies to view human labor as a means to the end of creating AI models that can replace them. Employing Vatican scholars to aid in editorial work, who are enriched both spiritually and materially by their contributions, is not even the ballpark of what he’s talking about.

Because when a piece of text goes through so many layers of editing the final products feels and reads flawless and institutional just like AI, thats literally what AI is trained to do.

Reposting edit because it’s relevant to your reply:
