Gaga vocals do you and don’t like

Why is everyone hating on Dope? Contrary to what many of you describe, I actually enjoy her way of singing on the song tremendously. It's raw, purposeful and perfectly underlines the desperate feeling the lyrics are conveying. Another plus: No pitch correction. Dope captures the essence of imperfection, or maybe you could say: It's imperfection perfected. Does that make sense? I dunno.

Overall I must say I enjoy most of Gagas singing styles. Earlier in her career (Fame Ball days), her singing sounded thick, rich and heavy. She then transitioned to a lighter, brighter sound, sounding almost like a bell. Then during BTW, she seemed to begin to merge both the heavier and lighter qualities of her singing. Her technique improved over time, her versatility and range of singing styles ever expanding. Sure, she had moments of vocal fatigue, losing some flexibility (Enigma 2020) and some of her Jazz performances around 2022 sounded all over the place and uncontrolled. But ever since the Joker Folie a deux album and Mayhem, she has taken back her place as one of the most versatile and skilled vocalists of our time. She has it all: The grit, the screaming, clean vocals, high belting, classical singing, rock vocals, jazz...

Mind you, I have no clue what I am talking about in a technical sense, since I am nowhere near an expert on singing. Rather, I am describing her singing with words that make sense to me.

Sometimes I like the "dope" vocal style, but the vowels or accents or however it's called can sound too dramatic and unnatural like how she pronounces "fine" here

the dancey ASIB songs are some of the worst earliest offenders of this imo, like why are you/Ally singing like Liza Minelli on this slinky tropical RnB jam.

Heal Me is great though, she's used the perfect balance for a song like that

I don't love her voice on Joanne. Perfect Illusion immediately comes to mind. It's not that she sounds bad, but it's like she's always on the 10 and I find belty vocals on such fast paced track annoying, it's the same feeling I get from some of the Beyonce's BDay songs like Deja Vu. Also, after so many fantastic live performances of MR I find the studio version to be so much inferior, I think she added a bit of a country twang and I much prefer her more open and full sound when she sings it live to nasality of the studio version.

Now everything else I love. She has improved so much vocally and I love how she uses her voice depending on the genre of music she's singing and Mayhem was a great demonstration of that.

I get what you are saying, Gaga does often pronounces certain vowels in rather... unique ways, and usually I enjoy it, as its part of her signature style. There are moments, though, that can feel a bit jarring. For example how she pronounces the word "plan" in Shadow Of A Man during Mayhem Requiem. The word "fine" in the video you posted is actually really nice to my ears and fits the serious tone of the performance. But in the end its all down to personal preferences

Dope vocals are  so anti climatic lol

I don't get an eargasm on it

Dope is not eargasm material, it is more of an "introspective soul searching gasm" :sis:

Ns, I genuinely think a lot of people don’t have any appreciation for the voice (and music in general) as a complex expressive medium as opposed to just something that’s supposed to sound pretty/nice.

You’re kind of spamming the thread and saying the same thing over and over again so I think people might just be scrolling past them for that reason 😅

Well I agree what what you said especially about her older vocals sounding better and I too wish she would sing like that again. The only thing I really disagree with is her Dope vocals sounding bad, I don't think they are that bad, they aren't my favorite sure tone wise but I LOVE how emotive she is on it and it has some of the most raw sounding vocals of all her ballads and it goes really well with the piano and building electronic production.

I despise her use of auto-tune in The Fame days.

Songs like Starstruck, and especially Paper Gangsta, are insufferable to me. :saladga:

You don't understand hip-hop, rap and urban music at all

The auto tunes are stylistic choice fit for those songs

Without that auto tune effect, it will sound dry like her runway verse

See the difference lol

I don't understand yall being against auto tune when she already proved to yall she can sing live  for 10 years now.

auto tune is used as vocal effects on those fame songs so they will sound good on the record

To respond to your first post, I don't inherently dislike auto-tune. Like any tool, it all depends on how it is used.

Claiming I do not get entire genres of music because of my dislike for Gaga's specific use of it in that album is frankly ridiculous.

I like a lot of the stylistic choices she made during the Mayhem Ball, where as she would be a lot more nasal during her first few tours, to then being too throaty (dope voice). I feel like she really found a good balance now.

My favorite Vocal performance by her in a Song is probably Die With a Smile though. The runs are SO effortless.
