Charmi3 163 Posted May 23 Share Posted May 23 What I love from a Gaga vocal is on a song like SHICD (huge part of my why it's my favourite gagz song). it's an understated sound from her, more RnBish, and because of that it communicates the song's intent/themes and emotivity through mood/tone and stylistic nuances. it's not trying to affect me with force. I loved how she used to flip into and between nasalised and throaty vowels on certain words (do my hairrr, gloss my eyyyes, good tiiime, diiie-uh, or the way she wauhhhlks, I touhch myself can't get enouuugh, it's alr-iiight) and seamlessly flip back to rest on a more neutral "speaking" voice, or switch to a belt, breathier sections, powerful mixy vibrato... SHICD has it all really. but she is such a versatile singer in that way which is why it pains me that nowadays I think she over sauces it to death, some songs and performances really suffer in that bulldozing of nuance. I aired my issue in the Requiem thread with the kind of vocal that is exemplified there, which she has really settled on since like 2015. that unrelenting, resonant, nasal, forward placement with very exaggerated stagey vowels. I can accept and appreciate the intention there and how it connects to the setting. I just have a problem with how she applies it to almost everything. the dancey ASIB songs are some of the worst earliest offenders of this imo, like why are you/Ally singing like Liza Minelli on this slinky tropical RnB jam. I die everytime I hear her come in like Andrea Bocelli at the pre chorus of Sour Candy. She does love to go up there, higher pitches/wider melodic contours are just more dramatic = interesting and exciting to listen to and for her to perform. My favorite studio vocal performances from her are fashion of his love, the outro of the Queen, close to you, and the final chorus of hold my hand is great. ironically, I know Gaga is a very talented vocalist both sound and technique wise. But I think I enjoyed harlequin because of her abandonment of total perfect technique, it really did a lot for the sound and I hadn’t heard her sound better in years. I tell people all the time, you can be a perfect singer technically and still not SOUND good, and this record reflects that. The sound of her voice is incredible and no amount of training is the reason for that, her singing is a natural gift of hers. I don’t have any vocals of hers that I strongly dislike but I think a lot of Chromatica and some of mayhem were a little bit on the too nasal side and it sounds like she is sitting higher up in her voice than is comfortable.
