Women's rights fully erased in Afghanistan in new legislation

The afghan government desires to return to a more traditional way of living. Due to this, on May 6th they implemented Decree No. 12, which states:

Women are not allowed to speak in public, not even to other women

Girls can't go to school beyond 6th grade

They are not allowed to report abuse without a male guardian present

Women are not allowed to work

Women are not allowed to go to the gym or to a park without a male guardian. They have to wear very conservative clothing if they choose to go. 

 

The government continues to defend it's policies as consistent with their interpretation of Islamic law and Afghan cultural values.

honestly... it's really sad for me to say that but, not our problem, their country, their culture, their religions, their rules. 

I mean it's sad for the women there, really my heart goes for them, but we've been in this rodeo so many times, if we say or do something, we're the bad west, if we don't, we're the bad west as well.. we just need to accept it that in some parts of the world social progress is simply slow and it's not our job to help and move it forward to modern times

Well part of that is because—like Africa—it’s been subjected to decades of wars and proxy wars by bigger powers and corporations wanting to strip mine their wealth.

I hope there are charities and networks inside Afghanistan where women are given the support they need, even if it's illegal. And I hope our governments are secretly helping them.

One of the source articles mentions this. Yes basically there are, but this new legislature largely reduces what they can do. The reason is like this: A woman can't work, so can't help other women. A man is not allowed to touch another woman because that is considered impure. Only a man is allowed to help another woman, but only in a very limited way.

For example if a building collapses you are not allowed to pull out the woman from under the rubble.

I hope as well but usually these activists escape the country to a better future, they have no choice.

My husband has a friend from Pakistan, who came out as gay publicly and risked his life daily, until it was too dangerous for him, my husband helped to get an asylum seeker statue in Italy and now he's safe and living free gay life.

I think this should be the approach, to help those individuals who wants freedom and can't have it without risking their lives.

I must give a remark, that this is pretty similar to how the jewish orthodox community lives, just the woman must work and provide, while the man prayers an study the bible and such.

As someone from a Muslim background, most of Muslims now are puppets who simply denied their own intellect.

Wahhabism caused irreparable damage among the whole Muslim community. And many people practice it without noticing it. Because it became mainstream. The veil was never a part of Islam until this ideology introduced it as a rule.

There is no single texts from the Quran that says that women should hide themselves with a whole burka or a litteral veil. It says to stay modest in the attitude, not to be erased.

The grand-daughter of Muhammed even said that she would never hide the beauty that god gave her.

The veil was used not to hide the bodies of women, but to be sure that the ones from elite class didn’t get confused for prostitute. And again it wasn’t all over their faces. It was a small tissue that didn’t covered their whole hair.

Instead of denying religions let’s bring back some publical debates. There are intellectuals that if they were given the spotlight they deserve would probably help the cause. Are you going to realistically tell to millions of believers that they should stop believing ? Because if Islam is this messy now it’s partly because of Americans and Saudi Arabs. Wahhbism was never mainstream until Americans and Arabia Saudi used it to motivate Afghan soldiers. They were used to shut down the rise of sovietism in this country. Then it spread in the Middle-East very fastly.

Yeah, I was gonna comment something about the period of Soviet occupation, Israel stealing Russian weapons and selling them to the CIA, the CIA turning around and giving those same weapons to rebel groups to basically bleed Russia ('cause weeee it was the cold war), that leading to the Afghan civil war, and then the rise of the Taliban as a result of all of that.

A lot of these countries get jerked around and the worst people get empowered, either directly or just out of the chaos, and then the West points and says "See? They're monsters!" as if our countries didn't create them.

In the 60s and 70s women were actively part of society, even holding some political offices 'cause their new constitution at the time legalized it.

I mean, that was largely an urban thing and rural areas were backwards, deeply religious, and stupid (just like the good ol' US-of-A) but still.

If Afghanistan didn't become this battleground for global superpowers we likely would have seen the institutional change necessary for women to at least be considered human today
