Also, ironically: the way in which the song both tells pop fans (who don't want this music from her) and rock fans (who will view this as unironically vapid failed genre tourism) to go f*ck themselves is one of the more "rock n roll" things a pop-adjacent star could do lol. An electronic track with some rock instrumentation backing and her unimpressed, bored delivery of "I'm banging my head, I'm hurting my neck, the dancefloor is dead, so I guess we're making rock music" is an expression of how this isn't what she wants to be doing but it's where the industry is headed so she may as well. Not saying that she's being artistically disingenuous but she's pretending like she is in a campy way. It's giving detachment, disassociation. All very deliberate, a new form of indie sleaze. She's really good at the cool girl persona and she's continuing it with a new avenue here. The production is cool, the lyrics are the usual tongue-in-cheek effort and more of an accessory to the actual “vibe” or aesthetic of the track or the potential album, which is fine. I just think she’s pushing it too far with the lack of actual traditional song metrics and structure. it’s nice to have a hook and a bridge or wtv. I don’t blame her but she already has attention, she could have put out a song we can excited to go through instead of a track that you barely remember you listened to. like, I listened to it once and it’s 100% as if I never did. but yeah it’s not bad and obviously going back to her roots a lot I don’t see myself playing it outside the album tho. not worth it.
