Hantavirus requires prolonged exposure in order to spread (shared quarters or living space for an extended period, hence the outbreak being on a cruise ship). The incubation period is genuinely concerning, but the extent of its transmissibility isn’t even remotely comparable to COVID. COVID can spread to multiple people within the span of 10 minutes, hantavirus requires days of close proximity exposure for transmission.

That's really important info, thank you. We need calm (Code for: Sorry for upcoming rant) and if this person is right, I'Il be very relieved.

The little amount of information we have is kinda bad though (not aimed at undermining you positive update, @Ladle Ghoulash).

- This strain still looks at sharing a bed or a plate as borderline in what can be transmission-zone (so again, yay for cruises with their buffets and everything) and just to look at the timeline again: patient couple zero that we know off died with 16 days between them. From then on a couple of days later both a British passenger was medically evacuated and a couple days thereafter a German man with whom cruise couple zero wouldn't even necessarily have had at least fleeting contact with died, followed by three more medical evacuations to Spain, not including the last Spanish passenger in hospital in Switzerland. Then the company makes their first announcement AFTER they quietly dumped I guess the last 30 people on St. Helena and announce that the rest basically fled around the 24th of April, right around the time when couple zero had died. The Dutch authorities are even disputing the 30 people flying from St. Helena number, saying it has to be 40. The flight attendant who got unwell serving any of the dumped cruise passengers (we have no idea which) disturbs me the most. That's incredibly fast and who knows how brief her contact was.

- Are multiple sudden unexplained, virus-like deaths and serious medical evacuations in a row so normal for cruises, even after all the lessons we've supposedly learned, that you just send everybody back home and is it so normal that most of the pax have fled before arriving at the end destination? If they'd waited another day that Spanish passenger wouldn't be in a hospital in Switzerland but sick on their ship too... But just send everybody back home/let a large portion of people flee much earlier without so much of an announcement, it's all normal? Obviously not, because if it was, they wouldn't have dumped the remaining people and THEN, almost a month after the first death, made an announcement to the world, that's for sure. They panicked and in the name of their almighty bottom line didn't want to become the next Covid Ship (remember that one that wasn't allowed to dock anywhere in March until many months later back then? We seemed to have more common sense in 2020 because they actually let experts embark and examine people instead of letting them dissappear in the ether...). That's what should've happened this time but no, we get to hear everthing AFTERWARDS - even that they dumped the remaining passengers/crew before any proper investigation could be done and of course without any form of tracking.

- I concede because of the long incubation period the problem might've started earlier than the cruise itself so tracking wouldn't be complete but we'd have something at the very least. Now with the flight attendant it looks like she got it very recently and of course we only know it was because of a cruise couple on that flight - maybe one of the dozens that took an available flight back from St. Helena to their country asap or back to the proximity thereoff (and maybe undertook several flights to get home ). So many fleeting interactions already leading to transmission (the few we know off!)...

Really sorry for venting but this is just again putting pure greed above human lives.  It's so stressful. And of course no comments from our respective governments yet... Despite my griping, thank you for updating, I really hope he means what he says, completely stands behind his words after having looked at the situation/timeline carefully. We can't freak out (constantly) like I just did yet AT ALL, I just hope this is a correct assumption from him and not a general statement on hantavirus (his phrasing sounds vague but it's an update from an expert nonetheless).

A reputable source says that officials with the WHO has called in Lady Gaga to provide her investigative expertise, this provides explanation as to why she was missing from the Met Gala and has seemingly delayed the release of Requiem. 

 This doesn't come as a total surprise as Gaga previously expressed a desire to work with infectious illnesses in her 2024 single "Disease" with the lyric "I can smell your sickness, I can cure ya
Cure your disease".

On the bright side, it's not very contagious until symptoms start showing up. So the 8 week incubation period isn't AS big a deal, though it makes contact tracing a nightmare.

This! It's a tragic situation for the ones currently affected, but on a bigger scale it's seriously not that big of a deal. Covid could turn into a pandemic mostly because it causes people to be contagious and spread the virus long before they start showing first symptoms. That's why daily testing was necessary for everyone, even if you were feeling well, because you could still be positive and contagious, spreading it for days without even knowing.

Hantavirus isn't new and historically hasn't ever turned into a major problem before because as soon as people start being contagious, they are already severely ill and bed ridden. I don't agree with how this whole situation has been handled, but the possibility of this turning into anything concerning is extremely low.

A cruise ship also offers perfect conditions for this type of virus to spread because there's no way to really isolate or avoid people even when they have fallen ill. But in your daily life, you wouldn't really spend that much time with a very sick and bed ridden person, and Hantavirus needs way more exposure to spread than Covid did.

New suspected hantavirus cases found in Spain and remote Tristan da Cunha

A 32-year-old woman in the southeastern Spanish province of Alicante has symptoms consistent with a hantavirus infection and is being tested, Spanish health authorities said.

She was briefly sitting on a plane behind a Dutch woman who had contracted the virus on the MV Hondius, Secretary of State for Health Javier Padilla told reporters. That Dutch woman left the flight in Johannesburg feeling ill before it took off on April 25 and later died in hospital.

A British man was also suspected of having the disease on Tristan da Cunha, the UK Health Security Agency said. Officials there said he was a passenger on the Dutch-flagged ship which made a stop on the island on April 13 to 15. x

This virus has been killing humble people in rural areas in Argentina and Chile for years, and nobody care enough for a cure, but now that a ****ing white old dude infected a lot of rich people suddenly there's talks about vaccines and i should care for them and feel empathy? **** them, enough with this privilege bullshit.

You know what? I might not be panicking but I'm worried about this issue growing bigger. I got COVID at least three times and got diagnosed with HIV a little over 2 years ago. And now I'm living most of my life in a hospital as a med student.  

I only hope for our governments to do their ****ing work.
