US Birth Rate Hits Record Low

The general fertility rate, which measures births per 1,000 women ages 15 to 44, came in at 53.1. That is lower than any year in the dataset going back to 1909, and 23% below the 2007 peak of 69.3. A general fertility rate of 53.1 corresponds to a total fertility rate well below the 2.1 replacement threshold.

Why do you think this is happening?

Because our country is a racist oligarchy, and millennials are the most educated generation in history, so we can see it for what it is and refuse to bring children into that.

People work 40 hours a week, live paycheck to paycheck, and can't afford for-profit housing. People cannot afford to have children.

Who in their right mind would want to bring another human into this hellscape?

Please say that to my parents, they keep asking about grandchildren.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

Modern Ecstacy

People in the comments are giving America-specific reasons as to why this is happening, but this is happening in literally the majority of the world, whether it's a developing country or a developed country. Birth rates are dropping to historic levels all over the world, whether it's the USA or Bulgaria or Thailand or Turkey.

Unless you are absolutely rich, I think it’s incredibly irresponsible to have a child right now.

Unfortunately the people I know who have children are the last people who need to replicate their DNA.

What's the explanation for the consistent drop off after baby boom?? If birth control + women in workplace didn't happen until 20 years later. Is that just a horny generation?

Oh you know my cousins? My 17-year-old cousin just popped out a baby because her family doesn’t believe in birth control. Her 19-year-old cousin had a baby last year, and her 20-year-old sister had a baby two months ago by some guy who’s 36. It’s really sad.
