Well it's a fact that the rollout was messy. Someone else correct me if I get anything wrong! But from my memory..

She wanted another song as the lead single (maybe Venus?) and the label insisted it had to be Applause. That got messy because it started to leak online, so they rush released it, which ended up being the same week and Katy Perry's Roar. Every radio station put them in direct competition and that was already a really bad start to the new era

The second single was slated to be Venus (I think there was a promotional image released that said something like "Lady Gaga's new album ARTPOP featuring Applause and Venus), and they started planning a music video and took promo pics for it.. but then Do What U Want randomly started skyrocketing on streaming, so they pulled the funding and scrapped the Venus mv to film DWUW

But THEN the DWUW video shoot was messy, and the R Kelly stuff started to resurface, so they quickly scrapped the music video. TMZ leaked a tiny bit of the video which was Gaga awkwardly on an operating table while R Kelly touches her. And then the nurses are all dancing around her while she's unconscious and the table falls (I think there was food all over her like she was a buffet?). There are also scenes with her naked in a room full of news articles about her lining the walls, and scenes she shot in front of extras performing on a stage with a catsuit covered in mirrors

And by that point it was so late into the era that the label decided to pull ALL funding to the era, and basically give up on it. But Gaga wasn't ready to let ARTPOP die, so she funded the music video for G.U.Y. herself, got a team together, and directed it herself, so there was at least 2 music videos for the era. Which is why it starts with a medley of ARTPOP, Venus and ends with MANiCURE (which also leads some people to believe that those were the singles she wanted to release)

We also know that her manager at the time (who quit during that era because she wasn't making him as much money as he'd hoped, after her insane success during BTW) pushed for her to make the music more commercial and to rework the songs. And that she did want a more experimental sound originally. We don't know if it was her idea, or the label's idea, to change that. She did originally consider releasing ARTPOP Act II with some of the more experimental stuff, but ultimately changed her mind. Which is a huge point of contention with the fans still to this day :laughga: "the lost ARTPOP Act II"  don't bring it up

ARTPOP was a HUGE mess. But at the end of the day we all hold it so dear to our hearts. For a messy as it was it was equally as magical and fun and brought us so many memories and moments

I'll be myself until they fūcking close the coffin.

The label definitely ****ed up the pre-planning era. There's lots of stories about them constantly pushing back on what Gaga wanted (things like Princess Die/Brooklyn Nights etc).

But then I also think Gaga had entered into a very dark space by this point and was making a lot of mistakes herself - such as the friendship with Terry.

It was a perfect storm really

As much as I remember Gaga wanted Aura to be the lead, didn’t get that and then ( as I remember reading somewhere) she wanted Sex Dreams to be the lead. Label pushed for Applause.

DWUW didn’t randomly went viral, it was released as a promotional single. The reactions were great, got on #1 iTunes in a lot of countries and then label switched Venus for DWUW as the 2nd single.

Sadly everything else mentioned about being an era full of mess is correct.

It was all messy. The label was messy and Gaga just as much.

For example, they told her they loved I Wanna Be With You ´cause it worked as an Adele-like song, so she decided to go against them and turn the song into Dope instead.

She had a whole music video planned for MANiCURE, supposed to be the continuation to Paparazzi and Telephone. She was supposed to have sex with many celebrities, including Britney, Lindsey Lohan, Paris Hilton etc.

She leaked Aura herself because she wanted it to be the lead single… it didn’t work, and she ended up changing the fans’ favorite part of the song when the album came out.  She even released a music video for the song with images from Machete Kills, only for the song to not be in the movie and to not even be out when the movie was released.

Sexxx Dreams was supposed to be a collaboration with Robin Thicke or whatever (Blurred Lines) :toofunny:

They shot a music video for Donatella in 2012 and it never came out (probably for good tbh).

When DWUW took Venus’ spot, she tweeted that Venus would still have its own music video, as well as DWUW. We got none.

She promised Gypsy would have a music video. She kept promising Act II would come, even when she knew it wouldn’t. She must’ve been in severe denial.

She wanted to exclude Applause from the album tracklist but Troy and Vincent insisted to make it the lead single. (Thank god!)

She kept saying over and over again that ARTPOP was all about minimalism and how she could be Lady Gaga without all the maximalism… and we got what we got.

She teased two Azealia Banks and two Kendrick Lamar collabs and we got none of these four songs. And obviously, Tea, Onion Girl, Temple, Brooklyn Nights, In Like With You.

And all of that argueably happened during her vocal peak (at the time)

She said the album was inspired by Disney princesses….

bobby was the one who told/forced gaga to move on and let ARTPOP dies (that she should focus on the tour and then move on) after guy single did not make top 50 on hot100

ARTPOP was a HUGE mess. But at the end of the day we all hold it so dear to our hearts. For a messy as it was it was equally as magical and fun and brought us so many memories and moments

Basically Interscope was pushing for the era to start in 2012 when she was on tour, MANiCURE was set to be the lead single (corroborated by DJWS in an Entertainment Weekly interview back in 2021) then it was Aura, then it was something else (we assume Sex Dreams based on insider info only) and finally Applause.

When they realised she wouldn’t have ARTPOP finished in 2012, they pushed everything back and she was supposed to release a single in April 2013 after the BTWB finished—and obviously we know why that didn’t happen. During this time Partynauseous was supposed to serve as an intermediate single with Kendrick. Maybe even one of the Azealia songs would’ve been released too who knows.

Gaga wanted the fans to choose single #2 after SwineFest and we unanimously chose Sex Dreams, but nothing came of it. Then she announced Venus as the second single and they used DWUW as promo, but DWUW charted so they changed plans and she said Venus would still be a single (presumably the third one). She only had 1 week to plan and 2 days to shoot all her videos at the time because of the schedule they had for her, so she wasn’t satisfied with DWUW’s video. They had a collaboration with BitTorrent to release the video and the behind the scenes documentary, images and interviews with Gaga, Terry and R Kelly about the video’s concept. It was all announced and even had a release date, but the date came and went. Despite common misconception, the video didnt come out BECAUSE of Troy leaving, as the team involved in the deal was Atom Factory. The Terry Richardson stuff didn't surface till the year after, and then the R Kelly stuff didnt resurface until she finally removed the song from the album. She said I’m hindsight she was just trying to be controversial for controversy sake. And the video from what we can gather was going to show the duality of her recovery from her hip injury, the glamorised and sexualised “public perception” of what happened (the operating on her in full glam, working out in full glam etc) all intercut with the footage from the BTWB of her throwing up, crying and struggling and recovering from her hip injury.

She took a break, got herself back together and devised a plan with Bobby. She released GUY before the tour because she felt the fans deserved it, Interscope wouldn’t fund it so she paid out of pocket and it was the first project she fully dealt with the business side, the creative side and the release side. She directed and Co-edited it, she starred in it, she did the business deal with Hearst Castle and paid $3m to do it all. Including a Minecraft deal to pay for it.

Troy had left because she was seen as no-longer profitable, and he took businesses and trademarks with him and sold them without her knowledge including her stake in Polaroid Grey Label and the rights to her perfumes, the ad for EDG was filmed in 2013 as well before he left, and was just used for contractual obligations, hence the no promo for it. We know this based on her tattoos in the video and shoot too.

He left with Vincent Herbert to go work for Spotify, which was in it’s infancy he was the Head of Artist Relations at Spotify—funnily enough, only when he LEFT Spotify did Gaga actually start getting good streams from 2017 onward. So we suspect he was a road block. Now he and Atom Factory aren’t involved in the music industry and their entire business revolves around AI and tech. His position as executive producer on ARTPOP and it’s material is exactly why Gaga can’t just release more unreleased songs from it. That and Interscope, as per her contract, have control over what unreleased material she can and cannot record or release again.

ARTPOP had it’s central themes rejected multiple times by her label and upper team, based on her own words people (presumably Troy and Atom Factory’s marketing team) wanted her to “just look pretty and make dance music” hence why she had a glamorous phase in 2012 and the satirical Disney Princess High theme came about. She clearly had a problem where she tried to force the music into the concept instead of letting a concept come from the music. The problems weren’t Gaga it was poor management, when Troy took on more roles beyond just her Manager.

Ah well there we go we now know the exact order in which things were chosen. Since DJWS confirmed MANiCURE was the original one, and since the leaked video treatment corroborates Charlie Sheen’s claim to have been asked to be in a music video in 2012, her hanging out with Lindsay Lohan, and she did say the Telephone sequel was performed at SwineFest (which MANiCURE was) and people just presumed it was Aura (which is weird to me since that assumption is purely based on the intro lyrics and that’s it.) it all lines up.

I think it was the opposite. The label told Gaga that they want I Wanna Be With You to be more striped down and soulful due to which she complied and reworked it as Dope. The label did interrupt so much in her creative process during that era.
